MATCH REPORT; Orange 2 Madison 3

Madison's much heralded entry into SASL Division 3 got off to the best of starts with a hard fought 3-2 away victory against fellow Division 3 newcomers Orange. It felt odd starting a new season without truly completing the last one and I would admit to a bit of nerves before kick off. Not knowing what standard the opposition would be was a bit worrying. Orange had previously played in the over 30's league and would probably have " youth" on their side. But while they had had a Summer break, Madison had been playing non stop since April. As it turned out Madison got off to such a whirlwind start those nerves and worries quickly dissipated and were replaced with the urge to win this game as well as we could. A strong Madison line up with Halil back in the team after his vacation and Arniesto back from injury meant we were well prepared for a robust looking Orange team. The Celts kept good possession of the ball in the opening quarter of the match and passed it around smoothly, taking up good positions around the players with the ball. Carlos looked to be in the mood for a great game and the defence looked solid in the early skirmishes. The biggest failing in the opening twenty minutes was that Madison did not really test the opposition goalkeeper even with the huge amount of ball possession that they were enjoying. Safet was the main goal threat at this point with his aggressive running but he was having no luck in front of goal. Just as it looked like this may start to frustrate the team a move down the left saw Fribeka play a lovely ball to Safet who moved into the box and slammed the ball past the goalie to give the Celts a well deserved lead. Orange started to attack with a lot more determination and vigour after this set back and some of their best chances came in the ten minutes leading up to the half time break. Their main tactic of lobbing the ball high over the midfield and last line of defence to fast running strikers is never one that the Madison team have dealt with well. The prolonged use of this tactic began to put the Celts defence under some pressure and they were clearly taking too long to clear their lines. And, just before the HT whistle a poor clearance fell to to an opposition player about 30 yards out and he wasted no time sending a bullet of a shot past the static defence and the outstretched arms of The Hulk. The goal had been coming but it was clearly frustrating to lose a goal so close to the end of the 45.
Madison started the second half in the same way as the first with good possession and passing but they were still unable to get decent shots on target. Great running by Carlos down the wing was allowing plenty of opportunities but the strikers were mistiming their shots or getting caught in offside positions. The Celts defence was still holding strong, with some great defending by The Hulk, La Boca and Goggs, but was increasingly getting pressured from the attacks of the Orange forward line. The game was on a knife edge at this point and could have gone either way. It was then that Carlos decided to take matters into his own hands with a mazy run down the right wing down to the opposition bye line where he shaped to cut the ball back into the box but instead shot from an acute angle past the goalie and in for the Celt's second on the day. The goal took some nervousness off the Madison team and they really started to pile on the pressure. A disallowed goal from Safet seemed to spur them on even more and once again it was Carlos that made the decisive move. Receiving the ball in the box he wasted no time controlling it then blasting it past the goalie for his second and Madison's third. The Celts had two more clear cut chances to score after this but gradually the game started to wind down but not before a sting in the tail. Another poor defensive clearance allowed the opposition to score a consolation second goal just before the final whistle sounded. A great first win in the SASL for the Celts but some more work to be done learning how to finish off a game!

MAN OF THE MATCH; Carlos, for his great running and two superbly taken goals. La Boca was close behind and Halil and Safet deserve some mention for their great running and all round performance

  3. I just realized that if the results go the right way we could be top of two leagues at the same time!

  4. Well, we've finally kicked off another new season. Now, I bet you're all anxious to play your next game as soon as possible! :-)

The first week is hardly the time to review scores and pick out which teams are the best and who will win what, but it is interesting to me to see how teams promoted and relegated from last season and new teams this season do. Four out of five of the new teams all won! Well done! It feels great to get that first win in a new league. Of the eight promoted teams, four won and four lost. Of the four relegated teams, two won, one tied and the other did not play today. So, just about what you would expect.

    Cheers,
    - Garry Archer (SASL Executive Board)

  7. Good game guys! We need to finish better, but better focus next time on taking shots and the easy passes should fix that.

Sorry I missed the tailgating, CBO!

  8. .............Johnaldo....smacking report this week, and awesome pics Annie! I could feel the energy (nervous) and (positive) as the match ebbed and flowed right to the end. Great win boys, and what a way to start the new league…YES!

Who did we sign? Tried to check the video out, but didn’t work.

My take away from the report at least, is that we need to practice dealing with the big high ball tactic. With all the coaches on our team, we must have several strategies for dealing with this approach. With all the English based teams in our new leagues, I’m sure we will see tons of this, and if we’re prepared tactically, we should fare pretty well.

When is Goggs last match before the other football league starts?

Nice to see LaBoca and Halil back in the side :-). Hey Halil, do we need to go back to boot camp after all the rich living on vacation?

Was Telat playing today? Didn’t see his name in the match report, which is very unusual:-)

  9. Telat played another strong game. Btw, I was the captain in your absence Roniildo...I washed the band for you, and will bring it to next week's game.

  10. ......Thanks Jodingo!! If you think it is time for Captain rotation that's fine too :-)

Did Goggs mention when he's done for the Fall season yet?

  11. Roniildo, You are the captain! I was just a place-holder.

  12. .....cheers Jodingo!! I can't wait for next week's match! Did all go smooth with numbers on shirts? Who are the 2 new signings to the team? Is it Halil's brother and Roberto?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Everyone had numbers....truly was surprised to see that! No new signings yet...Johnaldo was surfing the net in his free time...

    Fadil,

You have submitted this request past the noon deadline for your game this Sunday. I cannot make this change. You will have to do the following:
Notify your opponent you are playing at Buck Hill
Station a player at Wilby to tell the referee you are playing at Buck Hill

too bad we couldn't play at least one of the 2 games to beat Bridgeport. They only need 2 points to pip us at the post in CARSL

  17. Once again, great report Johnaldo!!! You omitted my second assist :o) on Carlos second goal (of course he did everything else to beat the last defender)... - my goal is to win the team assist title: Fribeka (2) Ilhon (1) :o)

Roniildo, the final score does not reflect the game! We had a far better possession game and gave up 2 bad goals! Telat should be on Johnaldo report - but for his outburst at the end of the game..... Once again we took a step back in term of supporting our teammates on mistakes or even to respect our teammates... You can hear some guys shouting at their own teammates for a bad play/pass and during the course of game the same guy will make a bad play/pass... Guys should look at their own game first (there is no superstar on this team) because believe me these individuals make a lot more mistakes probably without realizing it... So in general, everybody should be constructive in their criticism, and leave it for the half and explain in a civil way what his teammate could have done better (my own opinion, which left me in a pissy mood all Sunday and gave me a bitter aftertaste of a good team and good friends)

    Can't wait for next game

Look how big is your post, and you said that you didn't follow the blog, because I make long comments, so is to much to read.HAHA

I listen every body in the field, but is my mind what think if that is true, or just an angry reaction.
My concern is, have a good time with all of you, games are games, that's all.
    Have fun Dude.

I have something for you Fribeka!!!

  22. hey Tano.... that's my life motto! You need it when you support Celtic and the Sox

    ReplyDelete
  23. Roniildo.... yes if we played the Home make up game against Bridgeport and beat them they would be 4 points behind us but with 2 more games left!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Basically, Bridgeport have to at least lose 1 and draw one in their last two games for us to beat them overall. Unfortunately, Woodbridge could also pip us to the post as they are only 7 points behind with 3 more games to play... although i don't know how they did against Yellow Jackets this weekend....maybe Arniesto knows?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Bridgeport play Southington FC and Southbury at home in their last two. Woodbridge play Southbury and Milford away in their last two

  26. Tano, I take a few minutes to read the blog per week (Johnaldo report or when less than 20 comments). After that, I'll skip to the last post which should summarized the 100 post before.... Like you said, blogging is therapeutic for you... well it is for me too, sometimes :o)

Johnaldo, I was kidding about the assist tracker thus the smilly faces.... it was again therapeutic :o) just for a guy like me who regardless will look to pass to anyone in contrast of guys who are trying to dribble 10 guys and yell at you because you didn't pass to them... :o)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Sorry Fribeka, but I don't think it's considered an 'assist' when you pass to a teammate at half field and he then does a mazey run thrugh and around 4 guys before he unleashes a shot....

  40. The hulk is in............just a word from someone who sees the whole game from a different view. Our middlefield and forwards played a hell of a game but from a goal keepers view you made it easier on oranges goalie with many shots wide and over the crossbar...get the shots down and good things will happen.....it will make him uncomfortable which is what most goalies dont like. Defense also played a great game but as orange proved leaving balls 20 to 40 feet from the center of the goal leads to bad things....not even the hulk can defead the goal with a shot so close..........I believe we got a great win under our belt and moving forward i believe our best soccer is in front of us...............GO TEAM

    ReplyDelete
  41. A bird in the hand...?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Hulk! I agree... more shots on goal!... less thinking in the penalty box... you may miss, but there are more chances to score... we take way too long getting a shot off and most goals are scored within 10 yards of the goalie... i have only seen Carlos, Henrique and Scott score with any regularity from outside the box... our Defence also has to close down shots from outside the box as some guys can hit them from there like the Orange guy....

    ReplyDelete
  43. Roniildo.... Goggs says he will play till end of August and then we will see him again in Spring... he will be missed!

BTW, Arniesto and I will see if it is possible for us to train at Choate on Tuesday or Thursday...fields there are pristine, and perfect foe shooting practice. I know withthe diverse demographic local of the team, it is impossible to train where it suits all...

  46. any more players for Sunday??

    ReplyDelete
  47. Boys i just want to make one comment, We all try to do the best we can,but if you are being told the same things by multiple players you should take heed. We have all levels of players on this team, but this team definetly takes a different complexion when certain players are not there. I already said sorry for my comments, Soif we keep biting at each other what happens? Laboca

    ReplyDelete
  48. La Boca is not allowed to bite!

    ReplyDelete
  49. All those kind of comments.
    And we win?
But is ok, thats why Johnaldo created the blog.
So be free to express yourself, like I do.
I love Madison Celtics (and LOB ;o) why?
I have 20 games with the team (5 indoors included). I played all games since I started (perfect assistance ), and I lost only 2. If you ask me for sub, I look down and walk out. And I played injured 3 games.
I know, I missed a lot of goals, but I was the second after Jorge on last season.
And I will miss many mores, but thats forwards do, take the risk to be a Hero or a ridiculous, and for that. you need huevos (guts). So keep yelling at me TANO YOU Mother,,,beeeep. bla bla bla.
I will do worse many times more, and wonderful some times.
I always have revenge, without look for it.
And this is part of have fun.

  50. Hi Tano.... only 7 guys signed up so far! could be a small beer day! I presume we will see Telat, Ilhan and Halil but need confirmation. Still to hear from Tom, El Gato, BOR, Goggs, Arniesto, Safet

  51. Johonaldo:
La Boca will be very happy with his left over beers.

  52. I'm seeing all these posts about disharmony....Interestingly, I must have been oblivious to most of the tension as I thought we played well (mostly) and had a couple of minor, typical, bouts of jawing at each other, but nothing excessive.

True, we certainly could live with less yelling on the field..especially when 4 guys are all shouting for the ball...and the result is 3 of the 4 are upset when they aren't given the ball. I think people should realize that the ball can be passed to only one teammate at a time, so we need to adjust our expecations and keep our thoughts to ourselves.
