MATCH REPORT; Eagles 2 Madison 2

A hard fought game that at times looked to be running away from the Celts finally ended in a 2-2 tie but not before chances to win it came for both teams. In conditions that could be best described as very damp, Madison started the game against the Albanian Eagles in good form. Strangely, after pushing the game for the first ten minutes or so the Madison passes started to go astray, the runs were just slightly off and the defence couldn't clear it's lines cleanly. Hard to explain how it happened but after 15 minutes this malaise had spread and the Celts were struggling to get to the ball and to keep possession for any length of time. The Eagles forwards, numbers 9 and 16, were giving the defence a really hard time as they ran straight at the back line with the ball at their feet and most of the time went past them!
Attacking down both wings and whipping the ball across the penalty box meant that the Hulk was seeing significant action and often! Even with these goalmouth heroics it was maybe no surprise that the Eagles took the lead and with a very simple goal. A midfield attack and a ball accurately sent into the penalty box allowed the Eagles striker just enough time to control it and send it past the Hulk as he dove out. The ball was not hit hard but as it trickled towards the goal Johnaldo tried, and failed, to clear it before it crossed the line. One nil down and struggling Madison tried to get back into the game but could not get their foot on the ball. The shortness of the field meant that the Eagles could launch attack after attack with ease and pepper the Madison penalty area with plenty of shots. Inevitably under this type of pressure another attack allowed the Eagles to get free in the box for a sure second but The Hulk took the last choice and pulled the player down. Penalty to the Eagles and a chance to go two up. However, the Hulk had other ideas and dove to his left to make an outstanding save. Would this jolt the team into action? No, it didn't and the Eagles continued to attack with impunity and with about ten minutes left before half time they scored a great second goal with a powerful header.

It was clear at the half time break the Celts could either take a real doing in the second half or go out and fight for some pride. They chose the latter and with some tactical switches on the right side of the field they started the second half like a new team. Finally running down the wings with some real possession and pushing the Eagles onto the defensive for the first time since the opening ten minutes of the game. Telat had moved up to the right midfield and made a couple of great runs and crosses and in one great interchange with Roniildo he ended up right on the opposition bye line and took a "Maicon" type shot from the most acute angle you could imagine and scored ! What a difference this goal made to the game. It was all Madison now. Great running by Halil and Fribeka along with Roniildo in the midfield pushed the Eagles back further and further. A couple, of times Tano took shots that the goalie let slip under his legs and nearly over the line. Every so often the Eagles would get a break away and once again the Hulk would be called into action to punch, kick or stomach the ball away. Then thrillingly, a great corner over by Roniildo was met flush on the head by Tano who crashed the ball past the static goalie for a superb equalizer. At this point in the game Madison could have easily gone on to win it but time wasting tactics by the Albanians started to take the edge off the game. The Celts had a few chances to win near the end as did the Eagles when a headed clearance by Johnaldo bent over his and The Hulks head and shaved the bar by an inch!

The final whistle blew to end a really hard fought game and a share of the spoils!

Man Of The Match; The Hulk. An outstanding performance by the big man between the sticks . Kept the Celts in the game when they could have been over run in the first half!

Post Match Beers; Great beer choices by the one and only La Boca!.... and to thank him i give you this, his greatest love !

  2. I should say the second half was a completely different game. Great tactical changes. However, we are having difficulty keeping our offensive line up substitution in position. At some points couldn't tell if we really had any strikers in position.....

  3. El Gato.... thanks! Shame you missed the after match beers ... it was fun! Yes we need to try and understand why we start some game so badly then kick into gear.... we do need the forwards to take more shots on goal and for those shots to be hard and accurate!

    Bring back Rohan!! or Scotty!!

So, Guilford on 6pts then, Wallingford on 6 then us on 4

We play Wallingford away next week!

  10. what a game ....special thanks to the defense for hanging in there in a very difficult first half and the offense for stepping up in the second when we needed you the most. This game was a true team win even though we tied. we proved what most teams dont which is when possed with adversity we did not fold....this games experience will carry us going forward....lets not worry about how good or bad other teams are and take it one game at a time...this is the way it went in the spring and it served us well.....thanks to all for picking me up when i needed you the most

  12. Hulk.... i agree, it was one of those games were our heads could have gone down and we could have been on the end of a hiding in the second half.... but we had the right response..... your saves kept us in the game though!

  13. It's also clear to me that the SASL third division is a better standard than the CARSL B division!

  14. Johnaldo, I agree with the competition being better. Yesteday was perplexing and frustrating however. We started strong and organized and fell apart due to mostly poor 2nd and 3rd passes, and VERY DISMAL trapping. The ball was ricocheting off us like grease on a hot skillet. Can't explain it other than a lack of concentration.

  15. ......fine reporting as per usual johnaldo!

I give a ton of credit to Jodingo!! for our 2nd half revival. The swithch with telat was key, and Jodingo!! played an awesome role in D.

I had the same impression as you Jodingo as far a sball control goes. A lot of shins involved in the lay offs and short passes, and in the skidding conditions, it was really accentuated! The Dr orders some extra hours of ball control and juggling this week ;-)

I just want to say how sorry we all were for El Flaco!!!!!! I know you don't see much of the blog, but what happened on Sunday was inexusable. From now on El Flaco, Jodingo!! or myself will call you actually on the Sunday morning. None of us new that TOMA (who was to meet you at the Circle), was going to be a no show. There are several references in last week's blog from TOMA, indicating he was going to meet you. I even confirmed this with you, when I called you at work a couple of times.

Missed you yesterday, and especially the El Flaco special chicken wings and quacamole...yum yum...........THANKS A LOT TOMA!!!!

I agree with Roniildo....i'm sorry we missed you on Sunday and that you had an awful time trying to find the field. Tom had mentioned to me that you and Bruce and he were going to the game together. Tom called me Sunday morning to say he wasnt playing. By that time i had picked up Rob and Safet at the circle and we were on the road. Tom did not mention that you or Bruce would then need a lift...... sorry for the mix up. I will give everyone my cell phone number by email so they can contact me around communication issues

  19. Thanks, Ronnildo. It was good to change it up a bit by moving Telat and having me play a more offensive-minded right back. We were able to exploit them easily on the right side.

I thought I had saved the spreadsheet with our player contact information, but I don't have it. Someone please send it to me via my email address. I will contact El Flaco and Jorge and ensure that they travel with me when they need a ride.

  51. Thursday Practice:

    We need practice together, Roniildo,Jodingo,
Johnaldo, Tom, Bor, Halil his brother..?
I will try to see if La Boca want to go too and with me we are 9 .
And we talk about tactics and techniques, so we can work to build a backbone for the Team to distribute the ball, and create some style. How sounds?
Please, support this suggestion, and we can, not just win, we can play jogo bonito too (means beautiful game) and having more fun.
Also we need someone, with strong personality, and respectfully speech, for the Team and obvious have some idea of soccer tactics too, I can't say "Coach". if I'm a coach and player, I make the entire team, playing for me, and tell them, to looking for me in each ball.
that's why coaching and play is hard to do.

  54. Ron,
Let's cut the crap about my no show and what happened to Carlos on Sunday morning. From now on, don't be so judgemental without knowing all the facts first. In future if something goes wrong or doesn't make sense....ask questions before judging.

The reason I didn't show up because it turned out to be a rainy day Sunday morning and didn't want to risk my previous injury and pull the groin muscle again on a slippery field condition.

I told Carlos to be at the circle and he can either carpool with me or anyone else at the circle. I also said few other people are showing up at the same time including Bruce. Obviously, I was not at the circle and figured he will go with whoever driving to Waterbury from the Madison circle. Not sure if he showed up late but no one was at the circle when he got there. Aparently after the game, I discovered that he drove by himself to Waterbury but couldn't find the field. He said he didn't have my cell # (even though I have given my cell # to him a few times before and his wife. He uses his wife's cell phone) but called you and Tano for directions. He was unable to get you on the phone but talked to Tano and he helped him with directions. Obviously the directions were confusing to him and he was unable to find the field.

Let's also not blame me or carlos because we had a very difficult time with the Waterbury Albanian team. I understand it was a difficult game for us and we as a team had a hard time to come back and tie the game toward the end. I think we need to learn to win games without having carlos...if it wasn't for Carlos, we could have lost the previous game as well.

Since we don't practice as a team, we make a lot of mistakes as a team Sunday morning in trapping, controlling and possesion of the ball for a long peroid of time. How do you expect to win games consistently against very good teams if we play like that. Not a chance or we might get lucky.

Most good teams in first or second divisions in this league are very good with controlling or having possession of the ball thoughout the entire game.

I am sure not having Carlos's special chicken wings and quacamole with beer was very disappointing too

    ReplyDelete
  55. Tomassito,
Its only a matter of communication. You put on the blog that "I will carpool with Bruce and Carlos". If you couldn't make it to the circle you should have informed someone else to pick-up Carlitto. I went directly to pick-up Tano and LaBoca (it was put on the blog). Johnaldo who was driving didn't know to wait for Carlitto. We all thought he was with The Hulk or you since you said "I will carpool with Bruce and Carlos". We always say the key to a successful club is communication. No biggie just keep the lines open. Now "Tomassito" are you playing this Sunday? Hope the Groin is in route to recovery....

    ReplyDelete
  56. Cheers guys,
Lets have some laugh. It is only a game and we are having fun. This is the most fun team we had in years and I have been in this league for 15 years (CARSL and now SASL)now. We do click well and are also bonding well for most part.
Tomassito don't take this too seriously.

I should say Tomassito your name is "groin" on me.... :-) :-)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Tano:
Is your fault you given bad directions to Carlos and he get lost for an hour.
You don't want Carlos score many goals then you can be the Marradona of this team.
You need to score more goals.
You suck, and many guys are agree with me,but they are polite, and we don't have many players.
Let's also not blame on Tom or anyone else.
Tano: get lost. Bambi play better than you.
If you can't do better go back to your country or the Guilford team.

I wrote long time ago in the blog about communication is the key, and you know that as a coach.
But I notice on you, that you have many things in your head, so is our fault to delegate any thing to you.
I speak for myself and I believe that you are good player, and you was a good manager. But as a Manager for this team it bring an issue, that irritate many players, that want this Team keeping running.
I don't want you feel bad for it, is a normal thing for a Father of many kids have the world upside down.
Get better of your injury, and I see you at the field as a player.

He pay the fees at time and run like Carlos the only problem was that in Guilford they always let them talk with the ref, but he is not worse than La Boca (about talking at the field) and we handle that issue very well.
Carlos got many cards from CARSL ref. too.
Can we give him an opportunity?
    What can we lose?
He ask me today,if he can join us.
I wait for your final answer, and I wish that is the right one.

  93. The return game against Utrecht for Europa league qualification is tomorrow afternoon. Celtic are 2-0 up after the first leg so hopefully they can get over the line!
