Match Report; Guilford Celtic 1 Stamford 1

The well earned point gained by the home side Guilford Celtic, against a stuffy Stamford team, tells you only a small part of the story of this game. The Celts dominated large parts of this match with plenty of good moves and chances coming their way. Marauding runs down the right wing from Eduardo and great link up play by target man Dominic were a feature of the first half. The defense was pretty solid throughout the first 45 minutes and the half ended in stalemate with the feeling that the Celts could win this one. Of course,  if you don't take your chances events can overtake you. With 15 minutes gone in the second half the ref made a pretty poor call that seemed to distract the home team. With their heads still focused on the refs error Stamford floated the ball to an unmarked player in the box who had the simplest of tasks of slotting the ball in to the net. A goal against the run of play for sure but the game was in danger of slipping away at this point as Stamford grew in confidence. With time racing on the Celts put 4 up front to try and squeeze out an equalizer and with only a couple of minutes left on the clock an amazing flying header by Johnny I secured the well deserved point!

MAN OF THE MATCH; Lots of good players on the field during the game with strong play by Eduardo in the first half but MOM goes to Johnny I for his point saving heading spectacular! We will never hear the end of it!

MATCH REPORT; Newington Portuguese 1 Guilford Celtic 3

MATCH REPORT FROM RONNIE

The Guilford Celts get back on track, after taking another 3 points from last year Div3 Champs, Newington Portuguese! We started the morning on the bottom of the league, and after all was said and done, we climbed out of the relegation spots..Well done lads! This was a match that almost didn’t happen, as we were struggling to field a team on Saturday afternoon because of injuries and players traveling out of town! However, the bhoys rallied at the last minute to field a team full of grit and determination. Robin, Dominic, Tim and TomA made their way to Newington, despite carrying significant injuries, and we also had Johnny-I and Dustin back from vacation. This made a huge psychological impact, as we didn’t have to start the game with 10 players and no subs, as Newington had 17 players in their squad.

As expected, Newington started the match very aggressively, and as normal for them, sniped and complained to ref abut almost every tackle or decision, but undeterred the Celts remained patient and calm. Nevertheless, against  a run of excellent play by the Celts, the ball landed at the feet of their best midfield about 25 yards out, who took a lash at it, and unbelievably it dipped at the last second under the crossbar to deceive Dustin: 1-0 Portuguese. After the freak goal, there was no heads going down for the Celts, who buckled down and stuck to the game plan of playing the ball to feet, getting it out wide and crossing into the box. After great play up the right side from Eduardo to Alex-F (our newest player), the ball was played into the box from the right to Robin, who was taken out by a defender just before he got his shot away. Edimar stepped up to curl a beautiful free kick into the top left corner, but the keeper parried it out to the pouncing Robin, who wasted no time toe poking it in from 6 yards for the equalizer: 1-1. With our tails and chins up, we kept challenging their defense with great wing play and crosses into the box for Dominic, Rob and Johnny-I (yes Johnny-I playing up top!!!)  as targets, the Celts had lots of options and opportunities. After slick playout from the back, we won a throw-in up the left-hand side about 25 yards out from goal. Dan curved in one of his sweet left foot crosses into the six-yard box, which ricocheted off the keeper, and fell to the ever present Robin who tucked it away clinically to give the Celts a well-deserved 2-1 lead! Love those types of goals!

Anyone who has played Newington in the past, knows the script from here on in! Lots of in fighting and discontent, which played into the hands of a very calm and serene Celtic squad. And so, after another great play of short passing and possession by all of the lads on the field, Johnny-I was hatcheted to the ground just outside the 18, and who else, but  Edimar stepped up to hit one, if not, the best free kick I’ve seen period!! He hammered into top left, and hit it so hard, it stuck up in the stantion of the goal. Newington, us and the refs were speechless- what a goal Edimar, and the Celts were up 3-1, where we stayed until the final whistle.

Great win guys, and it is really tuff to single out a single MOM because of the amazing team effort that delivered our  badly needed 3 points, which lifts us out of the relegation spots. However, having said that, Rob’s performance and his two goals playing with an excruciating shoulder injury made him the MOM for me. Finally, the best news of the day was that John-B and his son Julian are recuperating nicely, and, with any luck, we’ll see JB back in his midfield spot after Labor Day!!!

MATCH REPORT; Guilford Celtic 0 Southeast Rovers 1

Another tough loss for the Celts as they fell to a one nil defeat in a closely fought match. The Celts had a few chances through the game to get a goal buy nothing clear cut. On the other hand the visitors had a barrow load of chances, hit the bar twice and would have had a number of goals if it was not for the heroics of Alex in goals. Save after save, some spectacular, kept the Celts in the game for the full 90 minutes. The Celts lost to an unfortunate own goal but Southeast are probably the better team on the day.

Man of the Match; Alex, Alex, Alex!

Match Report; Guilford Celtic 1 New Haven 6 and Current League Standings

Well, i hope you are all having a wonderful summer? It has taken me several weeks to write down the score of the last league game and post the standings but here they are. We were top of the league after 3 games and we are now second bottom after 9. But we are very close to 4th position too!

I don't know what went down in the 6 1 defeat because i wasn't there but I'm sure it was ugly. Anyway we have 9 games to improve our position!

NEXT GAME; Sunday 25th June vs New Haven Americans

The Celts have a chance to end the spring/summer section of the season on a high after a few rough games. They have a home game vs New Haven Americans at Bittner Park with a 10am kick off.

Come on guys! Let's end this part of the season the way started it!

MATCH REPORT; Derby Quitus 3 Guilford Celtic 0

Celts left dazed and confused as fog closes in.
A bad day at the office after the Celts slump to an awful 3 0 defeat to basement dwellers Derby Quitus. How the Celts lost this game after the opening 20 minutes is hard to fathom but with so many missed chances including a penalty and an opposition strike rate/ratio of 5 shots and 3 goals then i guess that determines a defeat.

MOM?  Johnny B kept motoring but it just wasn't our day

NEXT GAME; Sunday June 18th vs Derby Quitus (A)

We have an away game against Derby Quitus this Sunday. It is a 10.15 am kick off and the field directions are below. Let's get back to winning ways!

Teams should note that NO ALCOHOL is allowed in the park!

Match Report; Guilford Celtic 0 Greenwich Gunners 1

A 1 nil defeat against a strong and aggressive Gunners team on the face of it is not bad. Although the Celts clearly set themselves up to defend and try not to lose. Great performances by Dustin and David helped to keep the Celts competitive throughout the game. The goal was lost at a set piece and unfortunately the home team never looked likely to score through out the game.

MOM; Goes to both Dustin and David

NEXT GAME; Sunday 11th June vs Greenwich Gunners

Another tough game is on the cards when the Greenwich Gunners visit Bittner park for their 10am game against the Celts. The Gunner actually won Division 1 last year but were relegated because they fielded an underage player. Last week they hammered Guilford Bell curve 8 0. So, no huge expectations on this one but we really should go out and enjoy ourselves and who knows!

Home game, Bittner Park, 10am Kick off!

MATCH REPORT; Guilford Celtic 2 Greenwich Arsenal 5

The Celts lost 5 2, and there is no doubt about that, but this was never a 5 2 game. In fact the Guilford team more than held their own against the league leaders and were a goal up in the first half with only a few minutes left when the Arsenal team equalized.  Maybe a fairer reflection of the half as Dustin and the defense were extremely busy during the game. The midfielders were playing hard with Johnny B and Todd most notable in the first half and the attacking line of Michael, Rob, Ravi and Tano fought hard through the half. The second half was similar to the first but unfortunately Arsenal were ruthless taking advantage of any errors and got 3 more goals before Johnny B slammed in the goal of the game. If the game ended then it would have been disappointing but the ref decided to award a last minute penalty to the visitors to allow them to emphasize their superiority in the game. Still, it didn't feel that the score was a fair reflection of our effort.  A lot to play for in this season!

Man of the Match; Great performance again from Dustin and the defence although the score doesn't provide the evidence for that. The midfielders fought hard throughout the game and it was a toss up between Johnny B and Todd for MOM but i couldn't split them so two winners in this one!
