It was a game of two halves and we lost both of them. Out thought, out played and out gunned would be the brief summary of the game on Sunday. Orange were out to destroy the Madison unbeaten record and to show them who was boss in the championship race and that is exactly what they did..... with a lot of help from a misfiring Madison defence, shapeless midfield and toothless forward line! I know, excuses, excuses but after the pre-match warnings about giving them a chance at set pieces the first gift Madison gave was exactly that. A trivial foul on the edge of the box that allowed the Orange number 4 to slam in a shot that was a replica of the goal he had scored against Madison in a previous game. After that avoidable set back Madison clawed their way into the game and managed to equalize after Jorge was upended in the box for a clear penalty. Jorge coolly slotted in the goal and for a brief moment Madison were in the game. It didn't last long as the inability of the Madison defence to stop Orange shooting at will from any distance came home to roost when a fabulous shot was palmed onto the bar by the Hulk only for a comedy of errors from Talat and Hulk allowed the attacker to sprint in and score from short range. Half time arrived and if we only knew what was coming next we would have gladly taken the 2-1 defeat. But, on rolled the second half and the most awful series of defensive mistakes and midfield blunders the Madison team has perpetrated in a very long time. A series of bad choices, mistimed tackles and very poor clearances allowed Orange to score 3 goals in relatively quick succession to make it 5-1. Staring at the abyss, the Madison team took the collective decision to jump in and give Orange a 6th goal as their star forward waltzed through the defence as though they were traffic cones on a practice field. Strangely, after this debacle, and with a good twenty minutes left in the game, Madison started to play better....they really couldn't have played any worse!.... A lot of ball was played down the wings and shots and chances came their way. But a lot of the choices in the final third were poor ones as the balls were crossed too high and way too near to the tall goal keeper who was having a very easy day. Madison's efforts in the final stages of the game were rewarded however with a consolation penalty that Roniildo scored but the whistle couldn't come fast enough for the well beaten Madison team.
Orange had a game plan that they stuck to right from the kick off. Aggressive tackles and surly behaviour at the start of the game set the tone from the get go. Some fairly meaty challenges by Orange on the Celts were dealt with very leniently by the ref, but to be fair they snuffed out the attacking threat of Flaco by double teaming him and bypassed our midfield by simply punting the ball over their heads. Unfortunately the swearing and screw you attitude by the Orange team did not set a good example of how to play the game. Nonetheless, they deserved their win and sit proudly at the top of the table. The Celts have a week off to lick their wounds and to get back into action. There are a lot of games left in the league race and we are still in the hunt!
MAN OF THE MATCH; Tough one..... no one really shone in this one. The Hulk let in 6 goals but saved so many more to stop this game from being a total massacre... but he threatened to kill me if i gave him MOM....so for all his persistent running and attempts on goal the MOM goes to Jorge!
we can discuss the "crap subbing, fair time on the field, we have no first team, we are all as bad as each other" topic on here too
ReplyDeleteNot many comments.....?
ReplyDeleteSo, here is the issue; Over many years we have operated with a squad that has been in the range of 16 to 25 strong. However, for most games we have been lucky to get any more than 14 guys turning up. Recently we have been getting over 20 guys turning up on the day!
So, what to do? We left a 'recreational" league to join this more competitive one but we could resort to giving evryone the same time in any position they want and to Hell with the result. Or, we try and put a team on the field that might win most of the time?
People complained to me at the end of the last game because they didnt get enough time on the field.... anyone got ideas about this?
Nice write-up, Johnaldo. Very accurate report of the killing.
ReplyDeleteI think we should consistently field the most competitive team we can, and those who are less talented or less fit will play less.....to a point; that being those who are the the pillars of the teams' strength should play most of the game, but not necessarily all of the game.
Johnaldo,
ReplyDeleteOur current status is that we have 20 people at a game where 5-7 of them expect to play the whole game if they turn up and 5 of us play 20 minutes or less... in the long run this isn't going to work, people (myself included) will not take 5 hours from their weekend to play 20 minutes of football. If you want to keep a team where the core are on the pitch most of the game, we have to limit the number of subs who expect to play in a partiular game.
We can do this on the blog.
Bambi
Re. the complaining: Timing was very poor, to say the least. There's a time and place for everything. The griping might have had some basis, but the delivery wasn't appropriate.
ReplyDeleteBambi. How do I limit the subs?
ReplyDeleteThe weekend commitment is significant. Of course it's not all about playing on the game itself but also the social aspect . I don't know how you put a value on that. Some will have that as zero value because the rarely socialize and others will have it as a highlight of the weekend
Jodingo!! Yes. I could have done without the lecture coming off the field. I can certainly plan the subbing when I'm on the sidelines but it's really difficult from the field. We need someone to take charge on the sideline when I'm on the field. Tom could have done it for instance but I think we need to have 2 or 3 " approved" sub coordinators
ReplyDeleteThis is a very competitive league. Unfortunately some of our players do not know the limit of their ability, performance or skill on the field. I for one didn't play at all the second half and did not complain since I felt this is a game that most talented players should contribute more. We are here to win as well as have fun. We should not complain about the play time. If untalented, unfit players think they deserve equal play time because they show up to the game, then sorry maybe this is not a right team for you.
ReplyDeleteJohnaldo, I can contribute for subbing during the game while you are in play. However, I still say if we are playing against a very good team like Orange we are here to win so best players should play more. This is why we moved from CARSL to SASL for competition aspect of it and also have fun.
ReplyDeleteJohnaldo,
ReplyDelete(My perspective) I think most people who commit to playing for a football team expect to be on the field playing for minimally half of any particular game, preferably a bit more. That is consistent with a maximum of ~5 subs and everyone subbing in and out, or fewer if some people don't sub out.
IF you want to limit subs, it's done as follows:
If we have 18 people available for a particular match on the blog list, we (well, actually YOU) choose a list of 14-15 with a suitable spread of subbing players (defenders, midfielders, strikers). Those folks who don't play that week get listed first the next week so that noone is left out consistently. If you're not on the list, you don't play that week (though obviously you're welcome to show up and socialize). I have been on teams in the past that do this and it worked well. Everyone knows what to expect in a given week.
To some of you it may be surprising that I don't advocate completely fair playing time - we're not all at the same level of play, and I accept that 1. We all want to win and 2. For the best chance to win we need certain players on the field for a majority of the game.
That said, we should all know who those players are, and the subs should know who they are replacing and that they will be able to play for a decent part of the game.
Clear expectations would go a long way to helping the current situation.

I played only minimally this past Sunday, as I was told repeatedly by one of our 'star players' while I was on the field that I was 'awful.' I tried to not complain about it, however, I think destructive criticism on the field is unnecessary and counter-productive.
ReplyDeleteBambi, I, for one, do not support the method of "platooning" groups of players as it will most likely cause the team to field a weak team when we can't afford to do so.
Jodingo!! You ARE one of our star players!
ReplyDeleteHa! Thanks for the vote of confidence, Johnaldo.
ReplyDeleteI would have included Jodingo in the list of stars as well.
ReplyDeleteJody - Maybe you misunderstood my post (or I misunderstand yours). If by 'Platooning' you mean subbing 4-5 folks at once, that is not what I meant. In a team of 10 outfield players with 4 subs, you typically sub only 2 people on and off the field at most at any given time to avoid exactly that issue.
In any case, my point is this - I'm pretty sure we all signed up to play, not to be cheerleaders. If we tell someone to show up a the pitch, they should have a reasonable expectation that they are going to be playing in that game. Otherwise, we should tell them (even if it's me) that there's no spot for you this week and you are welcome to show up and cheer. But showing up to a game with 18 people who expect to play is consistently not working well.
Anyone else got suggestions here? I wasn't even there this weekend, clearly I'm not the only one with opinions on this issue.
Bambi
I do not think we really have a major issue here. I do not believe any drastic changes to subbing is necessary. And I do not agree with a drastic change of subbing suggestion that Drew is requesting.
ReplyDeleteIf Jody was told to leave the field because he was 'awful' then yeah, I think we have a problem.
ReplyDeleteDrew
At least one thing is positive in this whole thing.......we don't play this week......ever team has a bad game every once and a while and we made sure to get our moneys worth.....lets all calm down, there are 4 games left and we all need to get our minds back to being a team again. One loss doesn't mean major changes.......I didn't hear people being cut down during the middle of the game but did hear it after the game and that shit has got to stop. We win and loss as a team so nock it off. As far as subbing goes we all can take a breather for 5 minutes or so each half giving all a chance to play, trust me i'll take a sub if someone wants the pipes. For all that have something to say after games to John show him the respect he deserves, he puts more time into this team than anyone and should be treated as such. If you have a problem take him aside like a man and talk about it because what I saw after the game was very dissapointing.
ReplyDeleteHulk.... thanks! I appreciate the support
ReplyDeleteTime to add a little levity to the situation here...
ReplyDeleteI'd just like to add my hearty congratulations to Mr. Ryan Giggs
Did you see the pictures of the Welsh bombshell he was... uh.....

ReplyDeletegoalie pants....36 waist.....have a safe flight
ReplyDeleteBambi may be onto something here... if roll call is concluded by Thursday evening and there are 20 players available, Johnaldo and Ronildo can pick the squad of their choosing and post that on the blog by Friday noon. A week off here and there may be good for some folks who are carrying minor nicks, etc.
ReplyDeleteOf course, It may prove a mathematical nightmare however, to keep track of who has played, who hasn't and who needs to play.
Johnaldo,
ReplyDeleteTwo pairs of socks my friend. Thanks in advance... Hope you have a great trip. You need a break from all this...
Gentlemen,
ReplyDeleteI think a team meeting is in order to discusss all these issues face to face and this can not be solved or resolved by blog speciallty due to the fact that not all players read the blog on a regular basis. I suggest everyone should attend the meeting and everyone's opinion is important and should be heard. This meeting will give the team and the players a clear vision of what to be expected at or during any specific game. We all know some players are stronger than others but the key is how to utilize everyone's ability at a right time and place. Let me know what you think and let's pick a time and day that everyone can attend. The meeting can be on a thursday night pracice for instance or we can go to a bar one night.
I'm agree with My big bro and my uncle El gato.
ReplyDeleteEven good players have bad days if you are fwd, and have bad day you missed some goals but if you are def or goalie we get busted like last game. We been good for many games and when I have bad day my def back me up and at least we have drew game. But last game everybody have bad day, DS have injure I have shots saved and missed too, Carlos was busted by double mark, Ronny and Hallil was late to run back and fwd because the goalkeeper put the ball all the way at the box, plus Jody and DX need Goggs but unfortunately he wasn't there. Big Chris was at the right spot but orange was like mosquitoes around him.
The beat Orange we need short team formation, 5-4-1. El flaco have to be sweeper with Goggs and DX right and Jody left and very concentrate on offside line to leave them close to our mid, And I promise you one thing so we beat this team.

ReplyDelete.......safe trip Johnaldo, and I want to add how much the vast majority of us support all the great stuff you have done and continue to evolve toward to make us a better and more enjoyable club to play for.....the folks complaining and ridiculing other players on the team need to stop it. I think things will just run their course, and all will be fine.
ReplyDeleteSee you all week after Memorial weekend, and use the time to chill and prepare fare for our Eagles match :-)
Thank you LB for been there to take handsome pics, (what heck I was doing with my hands and mouth)lmao.
ReplyDeleteCan we have recorded the game to see our defects?
I will love to have that.
.......TomA, the meeting is a good idea, if the disgruntled folks show up and participate in a respectful manner....they know who they are. Won't be possible to arrange a meeting with all the team until after Memorial day weekend, but perhaps b4 the next match
ReplyDelete.....hey LOB can pick the team and do the subbing in between shooting the photos...LOL
ReplyDeleteRoniildo-you read my mind. I can definitely do that. And if anyone gives me crap, I'll take an unflattering photo and have Johnaldo post on the blog. That could work, right?
ReplyDelete.......great minds think a like LOB....luv it LOL
