MATCH REPORT; Madison 3 Hamden 2

Big Bruce Bruises Behrooz!

It was deja vu all over again as a pesky Hamden team belied their lowly position in the league to give Madison Celtic a run for their money. The final score of 3-2 to Madison was well deserved but not before Hamden had asked some tough questions of the misfiring Celtic team.

A very large squad of players ( 19! ) turned up for duty on a gloriously sunny Spring morning. And when the starting eleven took to the field the Celts looked like they would be far too strong for the league strugglers. And, after the first fifteen minutes of the game, any neutral watching would have said the same. Some powerful surging runs by David ripped holes in the Hamden defence with shocking ease. Unfortunately the Celts were profligate with the chances he created with poor finishing and bad choices in the final 20 yards. Of course, the 7 2 1 formation that Hamden had deployed made their penalty area look like Grand Central during rush hour. Finding space to move was a big issue and as the first half wore on frustration started to build in the Celtic team. Uncharacteristic shouting and finger pointing were only the prelude to Hamden springing a surprise attack which ended in a free kick just outside the Madison penalty box on the right hand side. A few seconds later a superbly struck shot found the ball nestling in the back of the Madison net for a surprise 1 0 lead to the visitors. Celtic bounced back on the offence after this setback with David once again the spear point of the attack. Shots hit the post, then the bar before another formidable run by David, straight into the heart of the Hamden defence, was ended abruptly as he was unceremoniously tripped for a clear penalty to the Celts. Captain Roniildo stepped up and coolly blasted the ball high into the net for the equalizer. Half time gave the Celts time to re-group and reflect on some good debuts by Kris and Ruggerho and even a come back performance from Bambi!

The second half started with the Celts back in control of the game. Great passing between David and Fribeka and then Roniildo allowed the ball to be moved up the field with some urgency. Safet, Tano and Jorge were prowling the crowded Hamden defensive line hoping for a ball that would break for them. But, out of the blue a break away from Hamden set up a fantastic scoring opportunity for the visitors when a superb shot was turned round the post by the Hulk at full stretch. An amazing save that clearly demoralised the Hamden attack. The Hulk was called into action shortly after this when he palmed away another great header that was heading for goal. After these near misses the Celts moved into top gear with some slick passing and accurate shooting. Once again David was at the heart of the action with some great dribbling and passing. But, having watched many of his assists being spurned by his team mates, he decided to take matters into his own hands by striding into the Hamden box and blasting the ball into the net for the go ahead goal for the Celts. Madison were cruising after this and the great defensive plays by Goggs , Telat and Kris meant that The Hulk only had to be called into action once more when he rushed out to clear the ball in his penalty area only to hit El Gato like an unstoppable freight train. End of the game for El Gato as he went off to count his remaining ribs. But it was not the end of the scoring and with ten minutes left on the clock, man of the match contender, Kris rounded off a great days work on his debut by lobbing in the Celts third goal of the day. Of course, nothing is easy in soccer and rather than coasting to the end of the game for a comfortable win the Celts contrived to supply Hamden with a last minute penalty which they duly dispatched to the sound of the referees whistle signaling the end of the game. So three points for the Celts and some ring rustiness eased out of their play as they still sit third in the league behind Guilford and Orange who both won at the weekend. It now looks like the league has turned into a three way race as the rest of the contenders drop away.

MAN OF THE MATCH; Some fabulous performances by Kris, Hulk, Goggs and Telat but the man of the match goes to David, the clear winner for his best game in the green and white hoops!

Great food and drink after the game too!

  7. Great report - probably your best! Good call on MOM! Kris would have been a good choice as well if it wasn't for the "hand of god" at the end of the match :o)

I'm still suffering, I had a hockey the night before our game, and I realize that my body cannot take so much abuse!

If you guys have not realize, Guilford did not lose 3-0 two weeks ago as reported (their game was PP), and they are 3 points above us on even games played!

P.s. we're still allowing too many goals!

    ReplyDelete
  8. Fribeka,

You are right. We have allowed 20 goals in 11 games. That's almost 2 goals/game that we have allowed the opposing team to score against us. Guilford has only allowed 7 goals in 11 games. That says a lot about their defense.

  10. We have a solid defense.... Pick on someone else....

    ReplyDelete
  11. Defense or offense is a collective team effort!
I never pick on an individual or a unit! You only get better as a team with constructive criticism or positive comments in and out of the field! We have a great squad as it is, but we can, and will need to improve on some aspects of our game (i.e. goals allowed) if we want to move up to the top 2! I don't know if it is the case in this league, but goal difference might be crucial down the road?!?!

  12. I have great practice today at Clinton todays lots of peoples there (24 guys).
Also I meet an old player of M.C. His name is Tomas.

Fribe...I lern something from last year , no matter how hard you try to explain tactics, strategys, or personal behavior, but when the game starts, those words are gone , like tears.......you know the rest.

Personally, I start to don't worry that much and it works for me, so I enjoy more the game.
How we said John? Look at the bright side...

  13. As the teams last line of defence lets discuss all the previous posts on the Goals against subject. It can be easily exampled in 3 simple reasons:

    1. 5 - 5 score last october against the EAGLES was because I came to the game still drunk from a almost all nighter.....SOLUTION:(That will never happen again MY FAULT)

    2. 4 - 4 score last august against the MORELIA was because that day our so called team had a meltdown with a 2 goal lead late cause of lack of leadership that day.....SOLUTION: (That issue has been resolved)

    3. Teams sucessfully scoring on 4 penalty shots.....SOLUTION:(Stop touching the ball or mugging people in the box)

These 3 reasons represent 12 of the 20 goals...nobody takes it more serious than me when the ball hits the back of the net.Going forward I will work harder on keeping the defence focused and working together for better results.

  14. Well done hulk. However, I do not believe any of those goals are your fault and you should not feel that you should take responsibility for them.

  16. Tano, on player recruiting... we had 18 players at the last game, while still missing Carlos, TomA, Halil and Jodi who all normally play. Not sure we should be doing any more recruiting.

  18. ......some great posts guys. The more we can relax and have fun out there (i know that's rich coming from me ;-)), the longer we can keep the streak going. There is a lot of footy to be played between now and November, so let's just keep doing what we have done last two games...WIN!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hulk,
Thanks for the reasons and your points are well taken but the overall result is function of the team defensive effort not just the goal keeper. I only responded to Fribeka's comment and it wasn't not meant to be blaming anyone but rather being a constructive criticism.

You are right, there have been some silly mistakes like hand balls inside the box or team meltdown at one of the games or being drunk at a particular game. Unfortunaley, these things happens and no one has any control over it.

The key is consistancy and playing a solid defense game after game. Solid defense is the key for best offense

    ReplyDelete
  20. doesnt help on defence or offence as well when the starting lineup is consistently different. I believe this to be one of the main reasons why we seem to always start most games so slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  21. .........Hulk, I agree with the start line up comment, but it is rare that the same guys show up week in and week out. we were expecting DX in D with Goggs, right up until the KO? That is hard to deal with

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hulk/Roniildo

I guess the only changes from "normal" was having El Gato and BOR start. But they both turned up for Thursday night practice and did well. They also didn't cause the first goal or the second! Defense is the resonsibility of the whole team. A stray pass in the forward line, a missed tackle in midfield and then we have only the back line to help out. More times than not they clear it....but if they are under constant attack then something is going to get through. We need to close players down more in the middle of the field.... that means a lot of running.... so some of our guys are fit enough to do that for most of the game and some of our guys are fit enough to do it for 5 to 10 minutes! Those 5-10 minute guys should run hard for that period of time and come off for a rest ..... don't rest on the field!

  23. I play fwd. and sometimes I have to came down and help and I do that, but most of the time I have to be patient and wait for the ball and try to do my job, "Score a goal".
Is good to score, but like Jorge said last Sunday and I agree with him, many guys of our team are obsess to score and they forget his position. I can't be the goal keeper and the fwd. if we consider this as a team lets play the roll that you are designated.
I will try one more game if I fit this new team, last game I experience many thing that I decide to no react. And I said this because I want to play with team guys and believe me I have more fun practicing than playing on Sunday, with a lot of yelling and whining, so I will react peacefully and take a step a side with all my respect and remember only the good times that we have because I love the after game.
And like Bambi said we are many players so who care one less.

  24. One more thing...
After the last game we drink some beers with the Hamden Team and they admire us the way we play and how organized we are.
But is always something in the blog or at the field and we won, when, when, when everybody will be happy?
What else you guys want??? pleeeease.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Don't worry Tano everyone on the team is trying to take it to the next level and that is a good thing. Some do it on the field and some on the blog still a good thing. We have all grown quite alot since I joined this team last spring.Moving up a level has proved to be a little stressful after beating up all the lower boys last spring. Hang in there your not going anywhere. Its called growing pains and they will soon go away. last I checked since I have joined this team we are:

    15 wins
    1 loss
    8 draws

Not too bad, we must be doing something right

  26. Dear Bruce, You are a good assets for our team, always do some social activities and positives comments, just little be hard to yourself ;).
I love that you bring those numbers because they are the same numbers to me.
First tournament that we play we were Champs.
and the second still running and we will champs again believe me, because depend on us to win.

Ronnildo...Your comment>>The more we can relax and have fun out there (i know that's rich coming from me ;-)), the longer we can keep the streak going. There is a lot of footy to be played between now and November, so let's just keep doing what we have done last two games...WIN!<<
    Make me motivated.

Johnaldo...make your thoughts a command on Sunday you have the power to do it.
And if you say something to me I alway listen because you do with respect.

I shouldn't say the I will step a side, because I have to many shirts of Celtic at ready ;)..
