MATCH REPORT; N Branford 2 Madison 4

The game was played under tough monsoon conditions straight out of a biblical flood scene. Just as the match began the skies ripped asunder to deliver ninety minutes of torrential rain, massive puddles, gallons of muck and a ball as slippery as a bar of soap in a prison shower! Amazingly none of these distractions were enough to derail an irrepressible Madison Celtic team as they romped to their fourth consecutive win of a thirteen game unbeaten season.

The blog roster call during the week had indicated a 22 man squad would be available for the game but as the game kicked off we had eleven players and a sub. Yes, Eleven! Although it was great to see the return of El Flaco from his suspension and La Boca back from, whatever he does when he doesn’t show up. Right from the first minute of the game it was clear that the team that adjusted to the appalling conditions first would get the upper hand. Madison would have to fight hard for the ball as the wet, heavy field made their normal smooth passing game a non starter. The first fifteen minutes of the game were fairly even as both teams tried to adjust to the difficult field and the uncontrollable ball. Some aggressive running by the Madison midfield especially Roniildo and Halil set up a few chances for Tano and El Flaco early on but with no success. North Branford were also fighting hard for the ball in a dour midfield battle with few chances coming for either team. As the promised Madison squad started to appear at the side of the field Goggs, Talat , David and Goggs were introduced to the game allowing the Celts to start taking some measure of control in the match. So it was somewhat against the run of play when the initial break through came. A scramble just outside the Madison box resulted in a shot being fired into the area and as La Boca jumped to clear it, the ball hit his hand. The referee had no hesitation pointing to the spot immediately triggering the perennial hand to ball; ball to hand debate on the side line. The Hulk had no chance as the ball was blasted into the net to give the home team the lead. This set back only seemed to encourage the Madison team to fight even harder with some great tackling and hustling play from David, Halil and Roniildo in the midfield. Carlos was also making some great runs up front but the shots on the Branford goal were just missing or being saved. A great Tano shot hit the post and Jorge went narrowly wide as Madison ramped up the pressure on the North Branford goal. And just as it looked like the home team might survive to the half time whistle a corner kick was floated in from Roniildo and cleared to the edge of the box only to be met by the maestro El Flaco who twisted his body in the air to meet the ball with a scorching shot that sailed into the net for the deserved Madison equalizer. One one at halftime and a strong sense the game was there for the taking.
Madison started the second half strongly forcing the Branford team on to the defensive and resort to fouling on a regular basis. David and Roniildo were the two main targets for Branford’s more aggressive approach but they stood up well to the robust tackles. In fact Roniildo thrived on the attention and went on a run into the opposition box before being rashly bundled to the ground by the goal keeper. A clear penalty for Madison, allowing Roniildo to get up from the muck to slam the ball into the net for the go ahead goal. The ability to sub players in and out was now starting to play a big factor in the game. Kris, Goggs and La Boca at the center back slots were immense and Jodingo!!, Talat, El Gato and Pink were doing a sterling job in the back positions. But the midfield was where all the action was happening and Ilhan, FrIbeka, Ruggerho and Bambi were playing their part in making sure Branford would not get back into the game as they supplemented the great play of Halil, David, Roniildo and Flaco. Another great move from midfield then gave Madison a two goal advantage. David found himself on the left side of the field but tightly marked and with only a few options available to him. He expertly slipped his marker took a couple of strides and unleashed a shot that clearly took the Branford goalkeeper by surprise as it rolled into the net to make it 3-1 to the Celts. Game over? Not so fast! Just as the celebrations had died down, another scramble inside the Madison box resulted in Talat being judged to have fouled a Branford player. Another penalty and another goal for the opposition to bring them back into the game. But this is when a strong squad comes to the rescue. La Boca had been asked to go up front and score a goal and that’s exactly what he did. A fantastic, skillful run by El Flaco down the Madison left side, found him deep in the Branford penalty box. A brief moment to look up and he then rolled a delicious ball right to the feet of the unmarked La Boca, one yard from the goal line, who could only do one thing and slam the ball into the net to restore the two goal lead for the Celts.
The last ten minutes saw some pretty tired tackling from the Branford team as they tried to rescue the game but to no avail. The Celts ran out deserved victors in a tough game played under even tougher conditions. Another great three points in a tight championship race that is really hotting up! Big top of the league clash next week as the top two teams face off for bragging rights!

MAN OF THE MATCH; A tough one this weekend as so many players had great games with three in particular standing out. The skill of the returning El Flaco , the hard running of David and the tough tackling of Ronnildo. But in the end, the great goal, the assist and the ever present threat by El Flaco wins him the MOM

  4. If anyone has a spare right hip I can borrow for sunday I would really appreciate it because the one I have now is very black and difficult to walk on. The first penalty kick had a 5 to 6 inch drop to post from center so quess what hit first when I dove. Great report as usual....bambi and halil have beer duties.......Ok boys here we go as I have done for previous weeks and it has seemed to work. You all have played with great intensity and passion over the last 4 weeks and as a result we have been rewarded with a 4 - 0 record and only 4 goals scored on us, 3 being penalty kicks(please stop touching the ball and mugging people in the F@#$ing box) moving on sorry about that. We have all talked alot about being in the position we are now. Its put up or shut up time guys, we have our destiny in our own hands and what we do with it is up to each and every one of us, as Roniido says its time for roll call. A couple last second thoughts as Tom A says, I see the game from a much different position than anyone else. We have done one thing over the last 2 games which bitch over calls. When this has happened our players have STOPED while the other team has kept going.....do this against Orange and bad things WILL happen.

  5. Yes, Hulk, stopping play, while the ball is still in play, to complain is clearly dumb, and several of our players need to figure that out quickly. We're fortunate to not have paid the price for that behavior recently (as we did pay a heavy price against Morelia last fall for exactly this reason!)

Otherwise, let's get fired up and win this next game!

    I'm in!

  6. I don't know if you guys have noticed but in the first photo above... the Branford corner... we have our WHOLE team in our penalty box! Even so they have 4 players that are standing behind our players and in a better position to attack the ball from the blind side..... worth looking at

  7. Johnaldo, I think the more the better in the box! It beats not enough. Though, I do find it surprising that Jorge was on the back post!

  8. Jodingo!! Well not sure about that. Ideally you want enough defenders in there to mark all available opposition But if you put your whole team in the box it allows the opposition to place as many players as they want into the box too. You want at least one or maybe two players outside the box to keep their defenders tied up and to allow for a breakaway clearance

  9. Thanks El Gato and Jodi for the drinks and snacks.
Johnaldo.. Thank you for your effort in reports pictures and I hope you always have the same problem (remember the sequences of our goals)
About the game I will take more serious the game with Orange and I'll be concentrated the 90 minutes on win and not in what ball we play or if the referee is against us. I have my chance to score and I waisted for Messi ng around so next game no jokes.
I felt very comfortable with our mid when the line was Carlos on left Halil left mid Ronnildo right mid and DS. right, very solid and aggressive at the same time, but subs did very well too.
No doubt our team is getting better this season than last one, so if we beat Orange before, we can do Sunday.
We talk more last game but always happen when were losing the game, or when La boca is in ;).

Johnaldo... We were 1-1 in the PK I went fast to get the ball from the net.;)

  10. Another good win. Johnaldo brought up a very good point that I have talked about it many times in the past but in the heat of the moment during the game our players seem to forget (or don't pay attention and are slow to react) how to defend an opposition player in any position. Johnaldo's comment:

"I don't know if you guys have noticed but in the first photo above... the Branford corner... we have our WHOLE team in our penalty box! Even so they have 4 players that are standing behind our players and in a better position to attack the ball from the blind side"

When you defend a player, you have to cover the opposition player from behind (standing behind the opposition player) and cover him very tight. Defening a player by standing in front of him (blind side) gives the opposition player the advantage to attach the ball without you seeing him. Some of players do this all the time and just don't pay attention to it and take it very lightly. We have gotten in trouble for this many times and this uncareful mistake has cost us goals in the past.

I will be the fan on Sunday

  11. Tom, You're suggesting that we stand on the far side of the attacker, not between him and the goal?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jodingo, please read my comments again

    ReplyDelete
  13. aren't you supposed to be between your man and the goal...............this allows you to step in front or behind player depending on where ball comes off corner.......just a question.....if I'm wrong please explain so I have a better understanding

  14. Hulkster, you are spot on. Defend your goal and goalie bros. That's all I try to do when we are not on the attack.

  15. Johnaldo, great report and on the spot. See you Gents on Sunday.... want more Dolmah or are getting sick of it.... :-)

  16. CORNERS

There are several methods which can be adopted to make up for the tactical advantage of the opposition when defending at corner-kicks:

Defence in Numbers: Every member of the defending team can be brought back to positions in and around his own penalty area or two players may be left up the field in order to take advantage of any possibility of a counterattack The defence should always outnumber or at least equal the opposition.

Covering the posts: Two defenders can be positioned on each post to help the keeper. The defender on the near post should not obstruct the keeper's view (1 metre away and slightly in front of the post - see Figure 2). His major concern is the space in front of him as the goalkeeper and other defender are covering behind, especially when corners are hit to the near post. The defender on the far post should be positioned on the line for the best possible view. These defenders are useful in not only clearing shots off the line, but in covering the keeper if he decides to attempt to punch or catch the ball. If the ball is cleared, both should attempt to move out as quickly as possible so as not to play the opposition onside.

Covering the penalty area: Many goals are scored in and around this area, especially from headers. The front of the goal must be covered by several defenders. Defenders can adopt a "Zone Marking" policy where each defender is responsible for a particular space. If the ball enters this area, he should challenge for it and prevent any attacker from gaining possession.

Otherwise, a man-to-man marking method may be employed. This involves an attacking player being designated to a defender who must follow him at all times. Tall defenders are often moved up from the back to capitalise on their heading ability. Close marking by defenders (who should match them in terms of size and heading ability) can help prevent them creating chances or scoring goals. Some teams may find it useful to combine "Zone Marking" and "Man for Man Marking" This allows different areas to be effectively covered whilst the most dangerous attackers are closely marked.

If the ball is played either to the near or back post, there is adequate cover. If the ball is played into the penalty spot area or outside the area (especially if another attacker is introduced into the area of the kicker for a short corner), then cover is also available. The weak factor is if the ball is cleared, then there is little possibility of a counterattack and if the opposition team quickly regains possession, pressure can be immediately put back on the defense.

Generally, player positions should be based on the opposition's formation and moves. If for example, the opposition places a player with good heading ability at the near post, the defense may want to place another defender in front of him so he is "sandwiched" to reduce his potency.

1 defender per goal post, 2 defenders covering the near-post area,
2 defenders positioned at the back post & 3 covering the inside & outside of the penalty area.

Blocking the kick: Positioning a player 10 yards from the player taking the corner kick may prove useful. They can cut out the risk of a quick short corner as well as interfering with the kick. He may be able to block the kick by jumping or force the attacker to play the ball differently and thus affect the quality and danger of the kick. If the attacker is going to play an out-swinging corner, the defender should stand closer to the goal line. For an in-swinger, by standing a bit further away from the goal line, he will have more chance of blocking the ball. This defender can also mark the player taking the kick in case the ball is cleared but is then played back out to him. He can also contribute if a counterattack is on.

  17. Guys. We do reasonably well at corners. But the point I was making is that a number of the players in the pic above are in front of the player they are trying to defend to the point where they probably don't know exactly where the attacker is. Our defenders do need to be goal side but in the photo some are and some clearly are not. our defenders should be goal side with the attacker in front of them if possible
