MATCH REPORT; Southington 3 Madison 1

Miserable run of defeats continues for Madison

We always knew this first season in the top division was going to be a tough one. The Madison team has a small squad and no real match winning "stars". You know the type of "stars" we seem to meet week in and week out with the opposition. The fast as lightning striker that slams 3 goals past us, or the midfielder with the ball stuck to his foot like a magnet or the defender that used to play for a Polish first division team back home. We don't have anyone like that in our team but, the team does have skill and for the first half hour of this game there was no doubting which team was the best; it was Madison. Some fine ball control and great passing led to a whole host of great chances for the visiting team. Southington were on the back foot and struggling to keep up with the quick passing and possession play coming from Madison. It was therefore a deserved reward when Madison were given the chance to take the lead after Ahmad was felled in the penalty box. He blasted the ball into the net from the spot only to hear the somewhat erratic referee blow for a penalty box infringement. Luckily, the second shot was no less powerful than the first and Madison had the lead. At this point in the game the midfield were linking well and going on some good runs. The defence were rarely bothered but as the half edged to a close things started to change. Madison were playing with no subs and it was beginning to tell. Some players started to flag and the steam went out of the midfield play. The runs that the Southington strikers were making were not being picked up as easily as before and inevitably just before the halftime whistle Southington struck a cruel blow against Madison. A Southington striker appeared from an offside position and had a clear run into goal for their equalizer. The referee was having nothing to do with the pleas for offside and the goal stood. A tough way to end the half as Madison had clearly been the best team throughout.

The second half was very tough for Madison. The energy and zip that had been the hall mark of the first thirty minutes of the game had more or less been depleted and what was left was a backs to the wall defensive strategy. The constant subbing of players by the Southington team starkly contrasted with the huffing and puffing of the Madison 11 that had to stay on the field for the full 90. Madison still had a number of chances to score but all were squandered and when a midfield/defensive fumble occurred just outside the Madison box Southington were quick to pounce to take the lead. Even at this point the team was still trying to compete. Some strong running by Roniildo and good tracking back gave some hope of an equalizer. But, those hopes were dashed when Southington slammed in a third to effectively finish the game as a contest. The full time whistle went and an exhausted Madison team trooped off the field. Some strong defending and great saves by El Gutso had kept the score down in the second half but Madison had no real threat up front. Gogglito and Hamid put in a great shift in central defence and had left it all out there on the field but it looked like some of our players never brought any in the first place!

The last game of the Summer season will be at home against the tough New Britain Polish team. If Madison get a full squad of players out then I'm sure they will try and finish this first season in the first Division with a flourish

MAN OF THE MATCH; Roniildo. Strong running and constant tracking back to help the defense makes this a stand out performance by the captain

  3. This comment came from a Celtic fan on a highly visited Celtic blog site.....problems for Celtic sound just like ours!

"If I could change 2 things about Celtic team it would be this...

End Product - the final ball from our midfielders is too often, not good enough. There is no doubting they have ability but I despair sometimes at the a lack of directness or a bad cross or shot from the midfield which ruins a move for us. And although a lot of fans perceive n'guemo, brown, mcgeady and maloney as our favoured midfield - none of them has got a decent shot on them a la lampard, Nakamura, scholes, mendes, gerard, arteta etc.

Finishing - its well documented that finishing has been a problem for Celtic in recent times. We are used to prolific strikers and deadly frontment over the years but I would put my house on neither Fortune, Killen or Samaras scoring more than 20 goals this season OR ever for that matter. So lets have some shooting practice over at Lennoxtown pronto or alternatively lets sign a good finisher preferably with pace.

    We can but dream???"

  4. Gentlemen,

This Sunday we will be playing against the New Britain Pulaski team. I am still trying to determine the location of the game. If is a home game, we will have a picnic afterward, and I will send another email confirming the location.

New Britain is another good team and hope everyone will participate that we can win this last game.

    Please confirm playing this Sunday.

    Thanks

I already let you know that we will not be able to play Madison this weekend; we are going to Oneonta; I sent out an email a week ago to you and Madison and to Zak. And, in that game Madison was supposed to be at home.

  18. Looks like we don't have a game after all unless we find a team to have a home game. Falcons are out of town in a tournament and would not play (see below)
    Tom the coach any suggestion?

  20. Just to confirm that our game got cancelled and the New Britain team manager just notified me that Behrooz was notifield while back about the cancellation. Not sure if Behrooz was notified or not but I guess it doesn't matter now. I will try to contact Guilford's team and see if we can get a game.

  21. He is full of s**t. Behrooz was never notified because if he was then you were notified and half a dozen other people. I am more organized about these things than you give me credit for

  22. Strong Field's grass has been cut, but the lines went away with grass. We'll have to locate a field if we're to have a home game this weekend.

  23. Dynamo Moscow 0 - 2 Celtic Celtic created a slice of history in Moscow last night, taking a sickle to Dynamo in the dying moments of an enthralling match inside Arena Khimki. A winner from Georgios Samaras in added-on time ensured their place in the final play-off round of the convoluted Champions League preliminary stages.

It was Celtic's first win on foreign soil in six years and the first time they have managed to recover from defeat at home in this first league. More significantly, what a night of rich vindication this was for Tony Mowbray. The manager, as expected, employed a strategy so defiantly bold it bordered on reckless. His faith was to be repaid in bucket-loads.

Celtic were so committed to attack that Dynamo or their manager, Andriy Kobvelev, simply ran out of ideas on how to suppress the incessant waves of green-and-white.

Ultimately, the Russians were exhausted and dejected, not least by the cruel timing of the two plunges.

With Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady again thrust forward like bayonets, it required nerves of steel and the odd piece of luck. In such instances of danger, Andreas Hinkel was a reluctant hero, slashing two of Dynamo's most threatening efforts off the line. The German can also claim an assist for both goals: one a delightful cross for McDonald, the other a heat-seeking missile that landed on Samaras's lap before the Greek substitute speared past Vladimir Gabulov just after the goalkeeper had denied Maloney from close range.
It says much for the contribution of Landry N'Guemo that he threatened to steal Hinkel's thunder. The little Cameroonian, signed on an initial loan deal, is already a sight to behold at Celtic's hub. He was an irrepressible livewire last night, revelling in the less glamorous chores and utterly meticulous in his tidiness. He may not be as illustrious a name as Makelele, Diarra or Essien but he might just prove as important to Celtic as the other specialist football anaesthetists produced in Ligue 1, provided they can afford a transfer fee that is doubtless inflating with every passing performance.
Mowbray's game-plan worked a treat, right down to the timely introduction of Scott Brown midway through the second half, just as Dynamo threatened a comeback. He buzzed around the front line to confusing effect to the hosts and caused just enough chaos to pave the way for the much-maligned Greek to strike a potentially lucrative late blow.

  24. Guys,

We are all set to play against Guilford and I have told them to bring food and beer for after the game picnic. Here is our picnic menu:

Let me know who's bringing what aside from your specialty item. Thanks

    Tom

  26. Looks like the menu is rising again. Let's not go overboard again. Hambergers and hod dogs and beer would do just fine.

  27. Tom

    let's confirm a few things;

    * Do we have 11 players?
    * what field are we playing on, we are at home, correct?
    * this is just a "friendly"….not a league game, correct?
    * have you read your player focus yet?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Arsenal, huh? How's that going to go?

Good job to get past Dinamo with a winner in the 90th minute away.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Arsenal will be a tough one, no doubt about that…..but, they will be two great games and Celtic will be the underdogs….they always get their best results against teams that everyone thinks will beat them

  30. Should prove a good test for both sides...

  31. Guys,

We will play on the Strong Field of course.....and sorry I have not had a chance of reading the player's focus that you made up for me yet.

Confirmed players so far: John, Tom A, Ahmad, Enrique, Ron K, Jacque, not sure Jody playing or going Cape Cod, Behrooz, Scot, Tom Pink, Hamid, Carlos, I believe Ron B. & Tim are playing, Jorge, and haven't heard from Tom J and Dan the Man.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Who's going to paint lines onto Strong field? As of last night, the lines have been obliterated.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Finally we get some directions,
    So far 11 confirmed
Ron B and Tim are playing Jorge
And Tom J, Jody and Dan are out.

    ReplyDelete
  34. didn’t get that e-mail….

    So it is a friendly…..?
I thought the team just wanted to do something simple with the food? you know burgers and dogs?

Based on your confirmed list we have at least 11 players….good, although at least a couple of subs would be great

Do we need someone to bring a bucket of chalk to mark the field up or should we just use some bags and jerseys on the ground to highlight the important parts of the field?

Don’t worry about your player focus….everyone else had a good laugh with it….which is satisfying enough……

    see you Sunday
