MATCH REPORT; Hamden 0 Madison 0

A rejuvenated Hamden team made a mockery of their bottom of the league status by holding the Celts to a 0 0 draw. If their was any doubt who would get second spot in the league this year the two points dropped by Madison handed the final promotion spot to Guilford.

A few late call offs meant the Celts started with a slim squad and the surprise return of the famous El Gato between the sticks. The shuffling of the pack just before the game meant the Celts got off to a bit of a rusty start with the home team really taking it to the Celts. After a few close run things, the Celts started to play with more assurance and confidence. Talat was having a good game at the right back position and the midfield was asserting itself in a bit of a dour battle with the Hamden middies. As has been seen in previous games though the Celts could not turn possession of the ball into clear cut chances. Tano, David and Paulo all had chances in the opening twenty minutes or so with no luck. At the other end El Gato was springing to the aid of the defence using his legendary cat like instincts to punch, pat and push balls out of the box. After thirty minutes the game took on the shape of a game that would last the whole match. Plenty of possession by the Celts, aggressive tackles by the opposition and relatively few clear cut chances. The blank first half gave way to a second half of a similar hue. The strong bustling play by David and Roniildo in the midfield was allowing the Celts to get plenty of the ball but the final pass or final attempt on goal just fell short. El Gato gave everyone a bit of a heart attack by taking a time trip to the eighties by picking up a passed back ball in his box! He redeemed himself with a great save when Hamden very smartly took the free kick before the Celts were organized. David was the main menace in the box in the second half getting to almost every ball that was sent in but none of his headers or shots hitting the target. Strong defensive play by Kris and La Boca at the back meant that El Gato became more and more of a spectator as the game progressed. The hoped for goal was not coming and even though the Celts piled on the pressure in the last ten minutes Hamden held out for a well earned draw.

Only one more game left in the season but we already know we will be playing another year in the third division.

Man of the Match; Great performance by Roniildo and David in the back and midfield, and El Gato in goal with David just edging out the Scotsman and the cat.

  1. Great report Johnaldo as usual. I had a great time as I think we had a great game and all played well. Except for my one moment of brain freeze...

  2. If you lament by your brain freeze, I'm glad because my tongue was frozen today during the game.Yep. It was a hard game because we didn't control the ball in the midfield. We have played at random. Get better, next week. Thanks John (coach)

  3. Jorge i agree we tended to almost play rugby style! One person would get the ball and run with it until they were blocked...then someone else would do the same.... its easy looking on from the side but if players just took even a second to look up and make a simple pass to the green and white player nearest to them them we would keep the ball longer and move forward more effectively.... but we tend to run with the bulls....

  4. Thank you for your great report John.
And Tom P. for the drinks.
I guess today wasn't my lucky day.
So next game I will work harder to break the def line.
And I hope we have a decent referee.
Madison Celtic need some control over the players, to much talk and distraction, doesn't help us at all and it getting contagious to everyone, before was only two guys that used to talk but now is like a Jerry Springler show. In one point today I feels like I want to walk away from the field, but I'm not like that. And I know I wasn't then only one who have that sensation.
How far I can hold this situation? I don't know, is only one more game left, thanks God, so we can make some tune up to facing next season and use the indoor games to recruit some good players and getting know well before Sasl season start.

  5. Tano. 438am?? Tough night! Yes I agree about all the talking. We talk way to much to each other and it's all negative stuff too. If even 10% of all the on field chit chat was encouraging comments it would be so much better. We also talk and make gesture to the refs way too much. Seriously ? When have you ever seen a ref admit he is wrong or change his mind when someone is screaming at him?

Let's just focus on the football !!

  6. sorry guys about sunday....work has been crazy...working days ,nights and week-ends. Left message with Johnaldo at 9am but he didn't get it....would never blow you guys off.....as it sounds El Gato did his usual outstanding job in my absense..............but zero goals aginst Hamden.......like we were back to the old yelling at each other again.

  7. .....missed u Hulk, but day, night, O/T job comes first. Hamden recruited 4 new impact players, so definitely a team to be reckoned with now...no doubt! No return to the yelling old ways. 2 players had a spat, and that was it. Johnaldo figured it out quickly, made the right change and that was it...

  8. Tano, sorry mate...forgot about our wee outburst with the ref (without naming names). Need to curb this behavior next season....

  9. Roniildo I know Juan (the last Sunday referee) and I know how he is.
I like to do one thing next game and I know we can.
Can we do 2 touch rules and if you miss the pass or do more touches someone outside will count and if you break it twice you are out for 5 min, please please do it and everybody have to be agree before start, we have nothing to lose at this time. That will help to be in the game and think in advance where you have to do the pass,
Also if you yell to any one include the referee is 20 bucks for that game so if you don't pay no play next game.
I bet you in less of a year we can have the dream team.

  10. Looked like we played well, but just couldn't finish. Why can't we make the easy last pass?

Arguing with the ref is more than sufficient reason to get yanked out of the game immediately. Anyone who does so should expect to be removed from the game...wither by the ref or by our team.

I've got beer for next week.....and I think El Gato will be providing also.

  11. Tano, Jodingo!!.Excellent points both of you. I'll also bring beers next week. It is our last outdoor match, so we can have a good send off to the season where we came so close to promotion....I would love to try the 2 touch approach TANO, and we an try it, but most of will need more than 2 in reality. Love the concept of quick passing, as it forces folks to come close to each other and provide the passing option you are talking about....the dream team :-) That's an aspirational; goal to set for us...HAHA

  12. I think we should make a videofilm the games and all to look at it. Get effectives conclusions and not only into the blog. Get organized now!!!

  13. even better Jorge! picture is worth a 1000 words. 90 mins is a lot of video, but doable. any volunteers?

  14. we should pick a few dates for team dinner, and try to arrange fairly soon, as the vacations are fast approaching, and would be awesome to get huge squad turnout for the dinner..???

  15. I'll start with Donovan's reef in Branford. Decent size, and can accommodate large parties in their upstairs section....

    ReplyDelete
  16. it can be 20 minutes of video, enough to feel ashamed of how I play and well enough to promise better. Otherwise I will not be able to shout to the others. So, I can go to the meetings. If we are 6 guys equivalent 50% of the team, enough as well. Did you understand? (sorry, maybe my english is not good yet)

  20. Look at the bright side:
at least we don't have the goalkeeper of West haven gray of over 48 div 137 goals against -109 goals dif.so that is a shame. the best strikers or the Cheshire Inter FC(over 40 2nd.div.) strikers, only 9 goals in the entire season.

  22. Johnaldo, if I interpret the table correctly, if guilford lose by 4 goals in last game, and we beat hamden with no goals conceded, we would go up? Mathematically, we still have a chance.....

  23. I believe in miracles......

    ReplyDelete
  24. Does Guilford even have to play this weekend? Last I saw, East Haven were offering to hand them the game! Roniildo, Keep believing!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. yes if this table is correct you are right!

But i think Esat Haven will forfeit but look at last year with Bridgeport!!

    ReplyDelete
  26. we dont need them to lose 4-0 though 1-0 would be enough butthen we need to win 3-0!!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Don't start speculation or getting winning pressure Gents., we don't do right by that way, remember the double weekend?
Lets play as like we have nothing to lose and You'll see.
