Who Will Win the Champions League?

No game for us today and because of Easter we will have no game next Sunday either! Can I check to see who wants to turn up and practice next Sunday? We can find a field and practice some of our moves? Also, we should start to think about a midweek practice night...say a Thursday night? Who is up for that too? I also want to know who is willing to play our postponed match against East Haven on Mothers Day? That is a mandatory make up weekend and before I check in with East Haven I need to know if we will have a team available to play. We can make it an early kick off so you can play and get back to the familia sagrada as quickly as possible. So, because we have a break it gives us some time to think about the Champions league! We are down to the last four and I think we should poll our resident experts to see who they think will win it this year; Barcelona? Real Madrid? Schalke? Man Utd? Vote on the poll button top right. Don't forget to mention below in the comments section if you are available for next Sunday practice, Thursday night practice and a game on Mothers Day!

  4. Thursday evenings for practice sessions are good for me. Where?

Holiday Sundays are open for me as well. I'm not going anywhere until the house sells!

If anyone is interested, there is a small pick-up game Wednesday and Friday evenings (~6PM) at the Yale fields. I discovered this when taking my kid to her practice on Friday. About 12-15 players show up, aged 20s-60s, some are good, others are not, but it is fun and a decent place to practice your dominance...

I’ll need some time on this one...

  20. We might be having a pickup match on Fri eves at Winthrop Middle School in Deep River.
The Valley Soccer Club has clinics from 5:30 – 7:00 for the youth for the next 5 weeks (not this Fri).
We’re trying to get some of the parents to kick the ball around while our young stars develop.

I don’t know who on the team is “local” to Deep River besides Jody and Tom.

  22. Apologies for this late email. I updated the SASL Website (http://saslsoccer.com) on Sunday evening, April 17th.

    1. Updated This Week's Results -- for April 17th SASL league games.
    2. Updated 2010-11 League Table and All Results -- for April 17th.
    3. 2010-11 Scheduling Requirements (as of AGM on March 5th 2011) on the Downloads Page.

The second weekend of outdoor soccer as the 2010-11 "Maxi" Season resumes was decimated by field closings after the torrential downpours of Saturday evening.

Fourteen matches were affected and were postponed, one of which caused a technical forfeit after a scheduling mix-up between the town and the home team and a CARSL league match was scheduled on the field instead. The SASL home team tried to find an alternate field to play the match on, but all the town's other field's had been closed at 9:00 AM on Sunday. (The forfeit is unofficial until the SASL Executive Board vote on it.)

For those 28 teams who did not play yesterday it was a real shame because the weather on Sunday morning was gorgeous and we have no league games scheduled next weekend, which is Easter Sunday. Actually, the Over-30 League Third Division did have league games scheduled next Sunday, but they have all been postponed and rescheduled :-)

Nineteen matches, however, did kick off yesterday.

Managers, please note the new "Scheduling Requirements" document on the SASL Website. We had discussed these requirements at the Annual General Meeting on March 5th.

IMPORTANT (Part 1)! Most teams reported their scores and postponements on Sunday, but there were several who did NOT! Owing to the number of them, and most were postponements, and it only being the second week, I didn't have the heart to assign "score not reported" (SNR) against them in their league record last night. Please note the rule was changed where teams will be deducted points from their record if they fail to report their score. It used to be we deduct a point after three failures for each failure thereafter to only two failures before points are deducted. Some teams would now be at two SNRs or surpassed two SNRs after this weekend and lost a point. Please pay attention to this because this is your final warning and the rules do not permit me to be kind-hearted or lenient from now on. Most teams still have another 15-16 games to play this season, which does not leave a lot of room for error.

    Thanks ever so much!

  23. GUYS...the game on Mothers Day is MANDATORY per league rules.... it means we MUST play it or we forfeit the game....

  26. Johnaldo,

I am up for thursday night practice and have to test my anckle and see if I can play. As a team, we really need to have this practice if we need to do well in the division.

IF I can play and my anckle can function, I will play the mother's game. Talk to East Haven and try to set the game for 9:00 or 9:30 am the latest...I am sure they will welcome the idea since everyone like to finish it early.

I will try to come to the Sunday practice as well.

    Thursday night practices:

    TomA
    Johnaldo
    El Gato
    Jodingo!!
    tpink
    Rugginho
    BOR
    Roniildo
    Tano?
    David?
    Kris?

Let's use the Madison Hammonassett State Park Beach fields (west beach) for practices. I believe the park closes at sundown. I will check into the time again. Cox school is another option but not sure is available but David can answer that question.

  27. Gents,

All postponed games from yesterday need to be made up on the next open date which is Mother's Day 5/8 or earlier. Clearly, if you already have a re-scheduled game or a cup game you should consider an alternate date. Remember, if teams cannot agree within 2 weeks I will have to choose a mandatory date which can be any day of the week. I typically lean toward the proactive team.

    Thank you in advance,
    Mike

  66. A bomb was sent in the post to try and kill the Celtic manager, unbelievable!

Celtic parcel bombs: Who are the targets?

By Brian Ponsonby & Andrew Black
    BBC Scotland News website

"Viable" parcel bombs have been sent to Celtic manager Neil Lennon and two high-profile fans of the Glasgow club - Paul McBride QC and former MSP Trish Godman.

Here is a look at the background

    Neil Lennon

Neil Lennon started his long association with Celtic when he was signed from Leicester City in 2000 by then manager Martin O'Neill.

The move was a dream come true for the Northern Irishman, who had grown up supporting the club in his home town of Lurgan, County Armagh.

Neil Lennon's tenure with Celtic was a dream come true, but he has become a target several times
He enjoyed a trophy-laden career with Celtic and captained the team to the league and cup double in his final season in 2007.

Lennon had short stints with Nottingham Forest and Wycombe Wanderers before returning to Celtic as a coach in April 2008.

He served under Gordon Strachan and Tony Mowbray, before the latter's sacking last year thrust him into the role of manager, aged 38.

His first season in charge has seen the club rebound and compete strongly for honours in the Scottish game - but it has not been without controversy.

Lennon has been banned twice for his touchline conduct - but only after disciplinary procedures by the Scottish Football Association were contested and strongly criticised by his QC, Paul McBride.

Depressingly for the game in Scotland, he has also been targeted by a series of threats - the latest of which involved a "viable" parcel bomb, intended to "kill or maim".

This, however, is only an escalation of previous threats and assaults against the 39-year-old which have plagued his time in Scotland.

He retired from international football in 2002 after barracking and sectarian death threats were made against him.

In recent years, other threats have appeared on the internet, or in graffiti daubed on church walls and outside his home.

Lennon has also been assaulted several times during his stay in Glasgow, most recently in 2008. That attack resulted in two men being jailed.

In January this year, the Royal Mail intercepted packages containing bullets addressed to him and Celtic and Northern Ireland players Niall McGinn and Paddy McCourt.

A suspect package addressed to Lennon was also discovered at a mail depot in Saltcoats in March.

In the history of Scottish football, no other figure has been subjected to such pressures. So why Lennon?

The answer, perhaps, lies in his background in Lurgan, where he grew up as a Northern Irish Catholic who supported Celtic - a club founded by Irish Catholic immigrants to Scotland in 1888.

The sectarian divide which exists in Northern Ireland also has its echoes in Scotland, dating back to mass immigration following the Great Famine.

Celtic's fans are drawn largely, though not exclusively, from descendants of these immigrants.

Their great rivals, Rangers, draw support largely, though not exclusively, from the Protestant community.

Amid the sectarian atmosphere that still permeates the game in Scotland, Lennon has become an easy target for people who irrationally hate what he is - a successful and proud Northern Irish Catholic Celtic supporter.
