Guilford Celtic is a Connecticut based team playing in the Shoreline Adult Soccer League since 2010. The team was formed in 2003 and played in the Connecticut Adult Recreational Soccer League for 7 years. In 2017 we changed our name from Madison to Guilford Celtic! NEXT GAME; Sunday 4th May, vs Cheshire Inter
It's OK you are not suffering from a deja vu moment....we are playing Cheshire again and this time we are at home. The weirdness of the league game schedule gives us an immediate chance for revenge! Let's get stuck in this time and score some goals! It's doable!
This will be a 10am kick off at the Madison Surf club, Exchange field. Anyone want to volunteer beer and snacks for the home game?
Before I go I want to copy in some comments Johnny B made after the game. He gave permission and he makes a lot of sense! Read it and tell us what you think.
" Let's go 442 with Tim and mike back in sweeper stopper. One stays really far back in marked when we have the ball. When they have the ball we are flat four back. Dan in left, john I (jock, Danny) right back (Jodi)
Ron and me in center with two new guys as outside halfbacks. If we stay four across, I can play in front of Ron when we have the ball and flat when we dont. It will give us one more pass below forwards and force them to hold up and gives me the ability to put pressure on defense and not get caught when we lose it. We all go 15 min in 5 minutes out across the field using a clock. It will force people to run hard for 15 regroup and play hard again. Subs for mid (Ruggero, jock, rob, maybe Kevin too) only one if Ron or I are out at one time. Forwards Leo, TANO, john h, rob b maybe Kevin)
Two forwards off set In middle switching sides leaving runs for half backs that will make them tired. They harass the back defenders when they have the ball which will force mids to help. They will be tired.
We set rules. 2 touch passing unless you are in danger. All passes from back go out to backs and back to mids and back out to half backs then to forwards. Always have a sweeper far back when we have ball as an outlet to reSet. No more long balls from outside backs. No more over the top balls to forwards. You get ball and have 3 sec to pass. ( you can get it back but you must release in 3 seconds) If you or we lose ball we all cut off passes in front of ball and all get behind ball until we get it back. We do not pass back nearly enough. We can put myself or Ronnie in defense if we need to show them what we mean. Possession is king. We all have to play the same game even if we all don't agree what game plan is correct. We mark man to man behind ball (which was working today). No marking space just a man.
My 2 cents.
John B "

..what? No Liverpool game on?
DeleteGuys we will be using a more planned subbing regimen this Sunday This will mean everyone will be subbed at various times through the game. We will have 3 pools of subs Forwards, Middies and Defenders Each group will manage their own subbing and it will be done in a sensible way. We won't pull off 2 players from one group at the same time Of course if only12 or 13 players turn up it doesn't have to be that complicated

Great comments by John B. Definitely need to keep everyone fresh to keep up the pace.
ReplyDeleteBut remember that short/outlet passes from defense to MF depend on MF moving or being open for them. Which requires a lot of movement from MF to come back on defense. Like John H says...if we have 12 or 13 or even 14/15 players we might not have the fresh legs to keep this up for 45 x 2.
Second thought is that we DO have a couple of big, strong, target men up front. So if the opportunity arises we should use that. Not our Plan A, but maybe we should not take that long ball option off the table completely.
It seems our main problem is scoring. We defend well (or at least adequately) for a good period, but then due to fatigue or loss of control we give up a goal, then two, etc.
Scoring lots of goals (ala Liverpool) can cover up defensive errors, but it also changes how the other team plays when they know we can score.
We play so well when we do make those short MF passes John B is talking about. that should be our Plan A. But we need to keep our shape from defense to offense for that to work. And that takes movement over 45 minutes x 2. And we need subs for that. My 2 cents.....
TomP I agree Unless we all got collectively fitter then regular subbing is the only way forward If you know you are for 10 minutes and out for 5 you can run like crazy for those 10 minutes rather than the pacing that's going on right now
DeleteYou know any ex over 40 Liverpool players we could get?

Johnaldo I'm in until I said way in advance that I'm out thanks.
ReplyDeleteThank you all for share your ideas I like that means that someone care for win some games.
If give my opinion will be sour and in some points aggressive and I don't want offend anyone or be missunderstood, however I will speak in front of all before the game, and I hope to see some positive results after all.
All good thoughts re. strategy.
ReplyDeleteAdditionally, the two forwards should play near each other (but not on top of each other) and alternately load up on the left side and right sides of the field, with at least one supporting midfielder when pushing forward. I've noticed that our forwards play so far apart that they end up being alone against 2 or 3 defenders, with nowhere to go or pass the ball.
Also, the defense needs to push up and play more aggressively, leaving only one or two guys back to guard against a breakaway. We play way too conservatively in the back and end up not supporting the middies and leaving a big gap, which the opposition takes advangtage of and exposes us.
I'll bring a 12-pack. Someone else should bring another 12-pack. See you Sunday!

Good comments.....4-4-2 has always been the best formation for our team and it has been for many years. I have been preaching some of the key comments that John B has made for many years....but the KEY is to put it in action on the field.......as a team we are NOT match ready or match fit. That translate into poor passing, making unnecessary errors, and creates long passes meaning losing possession of the ball and giving opportunity to the opposite team. How do we expect to win if we can't pass well, can't cover our positions well and constantly losing the ball.......is impossible.
ReplyDeleteI will show up to cheer the team and help with subbing
TomA, how is your hamstring doing anyway?
ReplyDeleteWe won a lot of games at the end of last season!
ReplyDeleteI'm "questionable" for Sunday. The calf is better, but still with tightness. I'll roll it out over the next two days and juice it up Sunday morning and see how it feels.
ReplyDeletehope it clears up soon Mike
DeleteAnonymous, what's your name? is not the hamstring....is the rectus femoris muscle on the left thigh.....have been limping for the past 2 weeks but getting better and have to do some therapy for the next 6 weeks I am told
