MATCH REPORT; Clinton 3 Madison 2

Under strength Madison team hold on for respectable defeat

I missed the game but our intrepid reporter Jodinho managed to write down a few salutary comments about the match! I know i was off white water rafting but it does look like we have a real sustainability issue this season. When only 9 guys turn up for a game you know we are in trouble! It's amazing the team managed the score they did with a reduced team count. This proves we are a good team but we need a core set of 16 guys that more or less will turn up every week. Some tough talking and reality checking needs to happen......and soon!

Report by Jodinho

"An undermanned Madison Celtic faced a revamped Clinton squad Sunday, with Madison proudly staying in the game by playing a controlled and energetic game. As the teams warmed up it became clear that Madison had only 9 players….where was Tom the Coach? Carlos? New recruit Todd? Seems that lack of communication was the culprit once again, as Tom the Coach failed to let his team know he wasn’t playing and he incorrectly assumed that Carlos and Todd got the word that the game was to be played in Clinton and not Madison....even the referee didn’t show up, and Clinton, with a full team of 18 players, agreed to contribute one of their players to act as ref.

Just prior to kickoff, Enrique was able to convince one of his spectator amigos to join the Madison side so that the team had 10. With the new infusion of young Latin players on the Clinton team, Madison had its hands full! Clinton struck quickly, scoring a quick header teed up from just outside the box, in the first five minutes of play. It looked like it was going to be ugly, but Madison pulled together with La Boca and Enrique leading the charge. The Celts had a number of chances on goal via breakaways as Clinton was mostly controlling the ball. La Boca and his defensive line held strong through the first half and the halftime whistle found the score 1-0 Clinton.

Fortunately for Madison, another of Enrique’s amigos, Andre, showed up at half and suited up to make a full strength team of 11. Not more than 2 minutes into the half Clinton scored again to make it 2-0!!! Instead of hanging their heads, Madison played harder, though the midfielders Fribeka, Scottie and Jodinho were literally running in circles and up and down the pitch. Andre provided two quick scores for Madison with skill and pace that wasn’t available in the first of play. A number of flagrant fouls ensued and the teams became rowdy and aggressive. A Clinton player was taken down in the box with about 10 minutes to play and the penalty kick was struck cleanly into Madison’s goal. Madison continued to push and missed a couple of equalizers, and the game ended on bad note with one of Clinton’s players writhing in pain on the ground and both teams completely at each other.

Post-game, several Madison players made it clear that they would no longer be playing on the team if only 9 or 10 players can be fielded."

MAN OF THE MATCH; La Boca; he played great D and shut down their primary scorer....though his Boca nearly got the better of him......

  1. Jody, i have one update fro your blog post...."and Clinton went ahead late in the game after a PK was converted following a lazy blatant foul by Scotty in the penalty box" ....Sorry about that one!

  2. I tried to avoid using names! By the way, your last foul was also very blatant, but wasn't lazy!!

  3. Hey, on the last foul he nailed me but ended up taking the brunt of it when I went to jump over him.

  4. Funny....you didn't try to jump very high....

  5. Tom,

I do understand that you had to attend your daughter tournament as you should; however, there was still a breakdown in communication. We need a list of everybody phone number (to be provided to everybody on the team that wants it) to insure that we have enough players on Sundays, and not to have to rely only on you. I have better things to do than to play with 9 players or having some sort of a scrimmage game on Sunday. Similar to John, I want to play soccer on Sunday and if possible with this team. Scott is frustrated, as everybody else, with the lack of organization on the team and mentioned that he was done. If this is the case, I'm done too. We cannot lose Scott. I would like for Jorge and Carlito to commit to the team or to tell us right now if they are still interested in playing. If not lets cancel the season and regroup next year. I do understand that some don't always reply on the e-mails or do not return your calls. But if so, whomever is in charge do not receive an acknowledgment by Thursday, it means that the player is not available. Lets not drag this for another weekend with promises like the last 2 games……

Jody, good report! I could have help but it would have been a lot of !#@$@#%@%#$

By the way, it was Enrique last

  6. I agree completely with your thoughts (except the part about you
being to help me with the report..)

Seriously, and quite frankly, Tom, if we don't get organized this week, I
suggest we call it a season. This half-ass manner by which our team is
being steered has completely exhausted everyone's patience, and we're at
    the end of the rope.

To be forthright, Tom, you have to understand that the team is on the verge
of capitulating. We either get it right or we get off.

  7. Guys

Tom and I just talked about how we can try and make the team organization and administration more effective. I have offered to step up and be more involved in helping to run the team. I know Ron has offered to be the treasurer and others have e-mailed to say they are willing to help. Tom has been running the team for many years single handed and i think now is the time to help out. We can improve the following:

    * Communication and clarity; E-mails, blogging etc is one way to communicate, and i will keep that going as best i can, but does not actually get to the final clarity of someone saying yes or no to the question.....Are you playing on Sunday? I would be willing to call team players up to get that clarity before Friday of each game. We can then make an informed decisions about playing on the Sunday. I just need everyones numbers.

    * Finances; Ron is willing to become treasurer. We actually need this in a team this size so we can have openness and effectively plan costs etc for a full year eg fees, balls, shirts and so on

    * Interactions with the league/Town; I for one think we should be getting out of this league because it is run so badly but we are stuck in it until next year. Currently Tom and Behrooz are the main two for interacting with the league and Town around fixtures, fields referees, rulings, fines etc. Anyone else want to be involved in this part of the process?

    * Player Recruitment; We need new players but they don't just fall off a tree we need to go out and recruit them. Someone, or a small team, has to come up with a plan for finding and vetting new players. Maybe every year or twice a year we should advertize and have practice sessions with any potential new players. Who is up for helping with this?

    * Entertainment; This is still part of the reason we turn up to play every week. A good game and a chance to interact after the game with a beer(s) and a snack or two.. We kind of leave this to chance but again if someone was willing to take the responsibility of organizing volunteers for the season it takes yet another burden off of Tom.

Of course all of this still leaves the on field stuff to be done like tactics, practice sessions, subbing etc......but if we can get the first list sorted out we will bein a far better shape for doing the rest. So, are you up for this?

Tom would like to meet with the core group who want to get involved one night after work and we can through this in more detail. Tell me if you want to get involved and we can arrange a meeting

  8. Guys

UPDATE SO FAR; 4 Confirmed YES, 4 Confirmed NO, 1 Unconfirmed NO, and 6 Unconfirmed yes/no

I know you can all count so we are on the cusp of having not enough players BUT we still have 7 playere who need to confirm their avialability! One more call off and we are below 11......unless there are more players in the wing that i'm not aware of.

    Anyway, let's get this roll call done as soon as possible;

    Me ( OUT...Ankle )

    Scott ( OUT...Travel )

    Tom P ( OUT....Travel )

    Enrique ( OUT...Knee injury )

    Fribeka ( IN )

    Jodinho ( IN )

    Behrooz ( IN )

    Roniildo ( IN )

    Danny ( ? )

    Hamid ( ? )

    Carlos ( ? )

    Jorge ( ? )

    Gerry ( ? )

    Tom A ( ? )

    Rob H ( OUT?...Coaching, please confirm! )

    Thanks

  9. I just talked to Enrique and he said he has hurt his foot last Sunday. I told him that he should take a week off and hopefully he can play the following week.

Guys, we are going to have only 10 players without Todd (he can only play goalie) if we all say YES for this Sunday. I would suggest to cancel the game this Sunday and meet at the Chips in Clinton instead, and I think that would be more productive for the team......plus we don't want to be traveling such a long distance to New Fairfield and play a competitive game against such a very good team.....so this is not going to work out....we can postpone this game........I would have been in a favor of playing this Sunday if we were playing an easier team but not against New Milford.

I would suggest to meet at 12:00 or 1:00 in the afternoon at the Chips. ......let me know if we are all in favor?

    Thanks

  10. ok i'm willing to call it now based on the fact that only 6 people have said yes to the game so far! But, it's like calling an election before all the votes are in!

    Game cancelled....!!

However, it would be good practice for the team to get into the habit of answering a weekly roll call really quickly! A simple IN or OUT answer is all that's needed. We still have 5 players who did not give a CONFIRMED answer! If they all said yes then we would have 11 players but the teams is obviously worried that someone will not turn up on the day.

Let's hope we have more players available for the following week

Looks like Monday night could still be a more viable time for a meeting rather than Sunday

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'll play. I can take one week off from coaching (I have two assistants who can take over).

    ReplyDelete
  12. thanks Rob, you and Gerry made 7 as available for Sunday, but still with Danny, Jorge, Carlos and Hamid unknown....so best we can do is 11 or 12 if the Todd person was recruited and became a goalie....at the moment we have said the game is cancelled Not sure when Tom has to talk to New Fairfield but if the 4 other guys said yes would you all want to play? I still think you would be nervous that someone would call off on the day and we would be back to the situation we have been in for the last 2 games

  14. I'll play with 7. I'd rather play with an undermanned team than not play at all. I also realize I am a lone voice in that regard.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The number is more likely to be 10.... i would imagine at least 3 of the final 4 players would be ok to play

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have talked to Carlos yesterday and he would play

    ReplyDelete
  17. OK, so we are now at 8 with 3 unconfirmed

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am available to play.....like I said before....I am not in a favor of playing with 10 against a team like New Fairfield and that would be a hardship for our team but this is my opinion.......I am OK with it if we have 11 players and all in favor to play

    ReplyDelete
  19. For me it's been too many years playing on teams with not enough players and always unable to compete full-strength. I say field a whole team or none at all...realizing, of course, that most of you probably don't care at all what I think at this point!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Gerry

every new voice is a valued contribution! I think we are having some real problems right now getting over the "comfort zone" number for a game. During the Summer season we would have 14 or 15 players saying they would turn up and it didn't matter if it turned out that only 12 actually did. This Fall season we knew that 2 players had retired and 2 were going to be unavailable...we got one new player...you! So when we have 11 or 12 players saying that they can play on Sunday the team is more worried about those last minute call offs.....totally understandable.....today we have at best 11 players that could make it for Sunday ( 8 confirmed )....based on past experience it's more likley to be 10 that actually turn up....so i still think the game should be called off.

We need to recruit at least another 3 players to get back to our 'comfort zone' number for call offs

Hopefully we will have at least 13 for next week

  21. Rob H, Behrooz, Ron, Jodinho and myself have all said we could meet this Monday night to talk about team admin etc. Of course we need Tom to
confirm he can make it… Scott is travelling…. Jacques, Tom P? Are you also available? I have only sent this to people on the team that either
replied to me or expressed an interest in meeting to discuss. If we can make it on Monday night then we could meet up somewhere in Clinton or Madison at around 6.30pm. Tom suggested Chips bar…But open to other
suggestions. If you feel others from the team really are interested but just haven't mentioned it then please go ahead and invite them too. Can you all confirm or not, your availability for a Monday night meeting at 6.30pm….Chips bar in Clinton….unless it's closed on a Monday

    ReplyDelete
  22. I would like to join, but can you make it somewhere closer (New Haven, North Brandford)…..
I leave in Hamden and have a child that I only see 2 hours at night (6:30-8:30) because of workload. The less travel on week day the better for me. Not that one night will kill me, but it is convenient for most of you, but for me it is an extra 1/2 hour travelling. How about the bar in North Brandford that you guys go after the indoor games?????

Don't want to be a nuisance, so don't change your plans only for me!!!!

  23. I'm available. Wherever.

BTW, Augur's is an Irish pub in Guilford. Bring your darts...

  24. so far we have 6 yes's for the meeting on Monday….I think we will try
    >for Augur's in Guilford…maybe Rob can send directions and confirm it's
    >open on a Monday….you know what the shoreline is like for Monday's……
    >
    >6.30pm Auger's Guilford…Jacques and Tom P if you can make it come along

    >I will send out a little agenda before the day

  25. We do Augur's 6:30. See you Monday nite.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Fribeka
sounds like the Augers bar in Guilford is only another 10 minutes drive

    does that work for you?

    ReplyDelete
  27. I am OK with any place but Guilford Mooring is a much bigger place and a big restaurant

    ReplyDelete
  28. We can discuss the location over the next 6 days....

But Monday at 6:30 it is.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ha ha ha....this is funny...we can't even decide on a freaking bar!!!

  37. what r u doing right now...finding new sources of energy?

    ReplyDelete
  38. The Guilford Mooring is a fine choice, but it is closed on Mondays: http://www.guilfordmooring.com/about.htm

Auger's (29 Water Street, Guilford, CT) is smaller, but open on Mondays. Formerly called Ceili's. If you intend to eat dinner during this meeting, the burgers are very good. http://www.augursirishpub.com/

Plug the address into your favorite map search engine (http://www.googlemaps.com knows where it is).

  39. If we could only harness the energy spent by the team on the keyboards and translate it onto the field we'd be unbeatable!

    ReplyDelete
  40. yes, that's right Fribeka...this is just an elaborate plot to make sure you don't turn up on Sunday......
