Great played game and a well deserved win for Madison Celtic on their last indoor game of the season. Final score 8-5 against the best indoor team, Guilford Black Eagles. Quick goal by Carlito at the beginning of the game was highlight of a wonderful match starter. However, it did not take long for Guilford attackers to put an equalizer pass, still sleepy from previous game, El Gato. Some sloppy plays and too many red shirts unmarked gave an advantage to the Guilford team and Madison finished the first half trailing 4-2. The second half was another story. Great defensive plays by Tom and Dejan and tight coverage by Ronildo, Carlito and Drew definitely choked the Guilford offense. Not to mention great saves by El Gato giving another dimension to the game. Madison was on fire, fantastic passing and great control of the game in midfield by Ronildo and Carlito gave great momentum to the game and Guilford goalie was bombarded by goals from Ruben and Halil. In second half Madison scored 6 goals and allowed only one unfortunate own goal from a defensive deflection. Great performance guys and great finish of the indoor season.

The Eagles Landed……with a big THUD!

Although our results in indoor this session have been mixed, we finished very strong tonight with a thoroughly deserved 8-5 win over the Guilford Eagles…Well done bhoys!

We lined up with Tom, Carlos in the back, Halil, Bambi and Roniildo in the middle, with Ruben and Dejan up front, and of course with El Gato in goal after his amazing performance last week:o). We came out of the blocks with some blazing paced runs and excellent passing between Carlos, Halil, Ruben and Dejan, which stunned the Eagles with 2 early strikes from Ruben and Carlos: 2-0 Celtic. I think we were also dazed by how easy it seemed for us to penetrate and score on what is usually a stalwart Eagle s defense. We either got a little complacent, or were daydreaming about why all the Guilford squads are named after birds (Eagles, Hawks…Chickens), but we lost our way, and 4 quick goals from them brought us back to reality. Dejan pulled deeper into midfield, and we organized into a man to man defense, as we realized we were giving them too much time on the ball, hence the reason for their easy goals. This worked really well, and we shut down their offense, and through hard work and patience we added another two to finish the half at 4-4.

The second half saw Celtic start very aggressive, as in the first half. The potent combination of speed and accurate passing all the way from Tom, Carlos and Dejan in defense through Bambi and Roniildo in midfield created easy scoring chances for Halil and Ruben who never missed in front of goal tonight! We poured in four more, with Eagles only managing the one in the second half to end the season in awesome style. Halil’s boot camp training is really paying off, with an outstanding performance tonight. that in my humble opinion, just pipped Tom or Carlos for man of the match!!! Key to tonight’s victory was definitely organization and structure, with every man doing his job and not wandering out of position. Great effort lads! Some of us were so pumped we stayed on to play with “the other” Madison team, and pummeled the Durham team, usually our Celtic nemesis.

In the end this indoor season, we played 13 (6 wins and losses and 1 tie), scoring 83 and losing 67….great effort boys.

Last Indoor Game!

It's the last game of the indoor season this Thursday and it's a tough one against Guilford Black Eagles. The game starts at 7pm and we need players to turn up for this one! I know Rob is injured and I'm out so make sure you can make it. This years indoor sessions have not been as successful as last years but still great fun. So far we have played 12 games, winning 5, losing 6 and drawing 1. We have scored 75 goals and lost only 62! If we beat the Eagles at least we can have a winning season based on goals scored!!


Next up is the outdoor season! We will get the fixture list from Tom soon, I hope, but the first game is scheduled for Sunday 18th April so for those of you that have not been playing indoor please reacquaint yourself with a football!
Tom will have to say whether or not we can get a friendly together against one of our CARLS teams for this Sunday coming?

Crisis?.....What Crisis??

It was a clash of the Madison's last night as the Celts crushed the Crisis in a truly one sided game. The final score was 11-3 but the Celts could easily have scored 20 or more with the busiest of the goalkeepers clearly on the Crisis side of the field. Nonetheless, that shouldn't have allowed El Gato to have a quick snooze during the game, but more on that later. The match was basically over as a competition before it had really started with some incredibly rapid fire passing between Halil and Ruben before one or both of them would slam the ball into the net. In next to no time the Celts were 3-0 up and cruising. Great midfield play by Tom and Dejan kept up the supply of passes to the two forwards and the goals count kept climbing. In defence Johnaldo and Danny were having a relatively quiet night although every so often the Crisis forwards would get hold of the ball and attempt a shot. On one of those occasions they managed to get a good break and clear shot on goal which sailed into the net. But by half time that was the only positive event that the Madison Crisis team could look to as they were down 7-1 to an exciting and penetrating Celtic team.

The second half was a bit closer mainly because of the antics of El Gato! A weak shot early in the second half somehow managed to squirm under his arms into the net and it looked like El Gato was getting his bored, sleepy look back again. That was completely confirmed after the Celts scored another and the Crisis kicked off again from the centre spot by firing a shot directly into the net over the head of a drowsy, distracted El Gato who had strayed about several yards of his line in attempt to have a good look at the game in the next field! Cats should not stray! Luckily for him the team got back on track and slammed in another few goals to finish the game strongly. Great performances by Tom A and Dejan in midfield and superb play by Halil and Ruben up front. And in the defence it was great to see Danny getting his soccer juices revved up for the outside season with some great defending and cracking goals!

Arrested Development Part 2!

A superb string of saves by El Gato, combined with some deadly shooting by Ruben were the hallmarks of a great Celtic 10-4 victory last Thursday night. Cardiac Arrest tried their best to pump some life into their game but every time they clawed their way back into the match Madison hit back with better and better goals. A much changed side took to the field without the striking invention of Carlos and Jorge. Luckily for the Celts they were replaced with the equally skillful Halil and Ruben who were both in sparkling form. With Dejan and Tom playing robustly in defence the Madison team had a very balanced and aggressive look to them. El Gato still had to be on his best "drug and coma " free form to make some great reaction saves. Although even he could not stop the blatant hand ball goal by "Celt on loan" player Tom "the Judge"! It was also worth noting the great form of the other on loan Celt, El Gogglito, in the Cardiac defence! The first half ended 3-3 but Madison were clearly the team on top. And after a few minutes of the second half the gap in quality between the teams really started to show. Some tough tackling and great vision by Dejan was setting up some good scoring opportunities and Ruben, Halil, Roniildo and Tom took full advantage with some great goals. Well before the end of the game Cardiac Arrest were a spent force and had lost the heart to fight any further.

Another couple of goals near the end of the game clearly emphasised how strong a performance this was by Celtic!

El Gato Stinks!

Another defeat for Madison Celtic with a score of 7-6" and you can only blame El Gato for it.This week we had two guest players, Danny and Dejan who had a great performance. After a quick 3-1 start by Durham offense I said to myself here we go again we are falling apart. However, with great offensive performance and fantastic goals by Dejan, Danny and Rob and of course great passing by Carlos, Halil and Ruben, we got the game under control and end up ahead 4-3 by half time. Great defensive play by Tom and Danny kept the back untouchable and we definitely were in control of the game. Then came the second half. As Danny was saying "it looked like El Gato was smoking something before the game". The phrase "5 seconds behind" was definitely written for and about El Gato. For every horrible goal pass El Gato, fortunately, Madison Celtic responded with a great equalizer. With Tom, Danny and Dejan trying their best to control the defense nothing helped El Gato to come out of his coma and recuperate. However, with great offensive plays and great goals to keep the game going for Madison with a score of 6-5, El Gato went deeper and deeper into Coma and became invisible. Two unanswered goals passed El Gato while he was reading the sports section of today's paper with only few minutes left in the game, gave the Durham team a 7-6 advantage and a victory.While all other Madison players had a wonderful game, it was El Gato who came short and ruined the night for them.Sorry guys, I make sure I show up next week sober and Jimmy ganja free.

We lost, 7-6. Dejan scored two from long-range, each a cracking, swerving bullet. Danny had a beautiful strike from a really bad angle. Halil had a goal that was from a nice passing buildup. And for coup de gras, yours truly had two goals. One stolen off Ruben's foot. It was tied late, then Behrooz let in a slow ball that got thru his hands. One of three soft goals against. Well-played match on both sides. We dominated play while passing, but when the running stopped, they took over.

Late Leveller Robs Celts

Madison got back into great goal scoring form in this game against the Italian Nitos....yes, their name is the Nitos...or was it the Nitros? Anyway, it was a good hard fought game with some great attacking play by the Celts but a somewhat leaky defense and two penalties finally sunk their chances for a win. Through most of the game the goals were traded fairly evenly with first the Nitos edging into the lead then the Celts. Great running by Bambi and Roniildo in the midfield help to close down their fast running forwards, and Ruben and Halil up front were in the mood for scoring goals. BOR , Johnnaldo and El Gato did their best at the back, although you could argue that losing 8 goals in a game may not be one of their best defensive displays! But, it could have been worse, if not for a few great saves and blocks by The Cat. In the second half, Celtic edged into the lead and held it long enough to make you think they would win the game but Nitos kept hanging in there and then got the first of two fairly cheap penalties. This first one, after a push, levelled the game but once again the Celts got back into the lead only for a last second penalty, for hand ball, allowed the Nitos to tie the game with the very last kick of the game. A better performance than the last two games but we do have to plug the gaps in the defence if we want to take advantage of forwards hitting a rich seam of goals.

Next game is against Durham Bulls!

Still don't know who we are playing but the game starts at 7pm....let's hope Thumper turns up to help Bambi!

And, Carlos no arguing with the ref, we can't afford another team revolt....we will end up getting a bad reputation ;o)

Bambi no Match for Scary Hawks!

Well this game had it all; goals, shocking misses, bad tackles, red cards, arguments and a team revolt. But, in the end the Celts got the same outcome as last week when they played the same team....a big defeat!
A stronger looking Madison team started this game but after a bright start fell behind to the same type of sloppy goals that they lost in the previous week. The Hawks clearly rode their luck again with outrageously angled goals, taking full advantage of bad passing and ineffective blocking from the Celts. Madison tried hard to compete but to no avail. Weak tackling, poor passing and woeful shooting up front marred their performance. At half time the Celts were 4-1 down and struggling to find some form. Carlos was trying his best to get some forward momentum but was being fouled and thumped to the ground at every opportunity by a very aggressive Guilford team. The ref was also in a constant, somewhat provoking, dialogue with Carlos that came to an explosive and controversial end when he was red carded for talking back once too much. This unfair, and egregious, red card sparked off a furious argument with the whole Madison team that resulted in them walking off the field and refusing to play on. In a highly unusual move the ref agreed to step aside and let the game continue without him! Once the game got going again, with the ref on the sidelines and Carlos restored to the line up, the game went a lot smoother, although the ultimate direction of the game was no different. In the midfield Drew "Bambi" Thompson was still trying to get his long legs to move in concert with his brain but was always just a second short getting to the ball before one of the Guilford players whisked it away. At times it was like watching a giant octopus unravelling one of its huge appendages to grab some food but losing out to smaller more nimble fish.....Although Bambi on ice has a better ring to it! El Gato kept the score respectable with some great saves but the second half was not going to be the story of a great comeback like last week. The Celts went 5-1 down early in the second half before the miss of the game, actually miss of the century if truth be told, by Johnaldo. A great break away saw Carlos running into open space and with only the goal keeper to beat he slid the ball to an unmarked Johnaldo who contrived to miss an open goal from 3 feet out! Even with this gruesome miss the Madison team tried hard to get back on track and the hint of a comeback was there when Ruben slammed in a great goal to make it 5-2 but, it was not to be and Guilford hit a sixth to emphasize their superiority and round off another dismal night for the Celts.

Things can only get better? See you next week.....

Green Hawks Down Celts

A Madison team shorn of its main strike force were put to the sword by a very effective Guilford Hawks team who scored at will in the first half. No Jorge or Carlos meant Madison had a very defensive set up at the beginning of the game. However, the hesitation to attack Guilford or compete for the ball proved to be a fatal error as the Hawks slammed in 6 goals in the first half with only one in reply from the Celts. Almost every attack and shot on goal by the Hawks seemed to find its way to the back of the net. Unerring accuracy or hapless defending? Who knows, but the end result was the same with abject humiliation on the line as Madison took to the field for the second half. That fear drove Madison to play so much better in the next 30 minutes with 3 great goals closing Guilfords lead to 6-4. Tom A was breaking up most of their attacks and also was having some great shots on goal. Alas, the Celts could not close the gap any further and Guilford wrapped up the game with another goal to finish deserved 7-4 winners.

That ended the first session of indoor. The next one start this Thursday. I will post time and team as soon as i find out!

Last Game of the First Session of Indoor

This Thursday night at 8pm will be the last game of our first session of indoor soccer. We play our great rivals Guilford Hawks and this will provide a great opportunity to get back into some good form. Most of the games we have played in this first session we could have won very easily. The few games we have lost have been down to some bad luck and frankly some bad form. As we know the Hawks always give us a great game but we should be good enough to round off this first indoor session with a resounding victory!

The second session will start immediately the following week.

Roniildo is still collecting fees for the second indoor session, the new Spring season and the 2010-2011 SASL season. Thanks to those that have already paid up.

Don't forget to ask Roniildo about our 'pay to play' scheme which may help with the payment schedule.

The 7 Deadly Sins of BOR!

Madison Celtic slumped to a 9-7 defeat against a Club Napoli "select" that drew players from multiple teams in the Branford dome. The fact that an international team had to be constructed before the game does not detract from the fact that they probably deserved the victory after so many attacking misses and defensive errors by the Madison team. One thing is for sure, this game will not go down in the key soccer memento book of BOR as he forlornly moved from one position to the next on the field trying to find that elusive form that he normally brings to games. He must have missed 4 or 5 gilt edged chances to score in the first 30 minutes of the game before switching to the defence and seeing 1 or 2 awful shots go by him. Not that he was the only player having troubles....Johnaldo did not have one of his best games either although he was thankful that BOR was taking the heat! 3-1 up at half time was probably a fair reflection for the control Madison had on the game at that time but in the second half Napoli came at them hard. Goals were traded one after the other until at 5-5 Napoli managed to score 4 on the trot and break the coordination of the Madison team. Some of the goals they scored where from crazy angles and from very simple pass and go moves. Madison got back into the groove late in the game and scored two more goals and where looking good for more when they ran out of time.

Last game of this indoor session is next week against our old foes Guilford Hawks at 8pm

Arrested Development

The Celts turned on the style in the second half of the game against Cardiac Arrest to run up a strong 6-2 victory. Great defensive play by Tom A and Carlos was the bedrock for the victory as the opposition initially kept pace with Madison, peppering their goal with shots that narrowly missed, hit the bar or were saved by El Gato. Nonetheless, Madison were deserving of their 3-2 lead as they entered the second half. Three great goals by Halil, Jorge and a "Rooneyesqe" goal by Roniildo had set the scene for an even stronger performance in the second half that really blew away the opposition. Strong running by Drew, having his best game for the Celts, and the constant menace of Jorge and Halil kept the Cardiac team on the defensive. But when the goals started to flow they crumbled. Great goals by Jorge and others finished off the opposition early in the second half with the whistle signalling a comprehensive 6-2 victory for the Celts!

We now have a week off before our next game which will be on Thursday 18th Feb against Club Napoli!

Branford Blasted!

A game that was wrapped up and sealed early in the second half when the Celts strolled to a 7-1 lead against North Branford nearly came unglued before the end of the game. Great goals by Jorge and Henrique prompted by the probing passing of Carlos and the running of Johnaldo, Roniildo and BOR ensured that North Branford were chasing shadows for most of the game. Nice passing and great goals really stunned the Branford team who had nothing to offer back. But, early in the second half the Madison team stopped doing the easy stuff well and went on the hunt for glory goals allowing the North Branford team back into the game. Madison shipped 4 easy goals without reply to take the score to 7-5 and were suddenly chasing the game. Luckily the Celts managed to keep their collective noses in front and eventually won 10-7 but this game was made a lot tougher than it had to be!

Next game up is against Cardiac Arrest at 7pm!

Eagles Swoop to Kill

An unfortunate defeat to a good Guilford Black Eagles team was the outcome on Thursday night. A tough first half saw Madison fight for every ball and give as good as they got. Each goal Guilford scored the Celts replied with one of their own...well at least Jorge did. The first half ended 2-2 but with a feeling that Madison could go on to win the match. This feeling became stronger when two great goals pushed the Celts into a 4-2 winning position through the fantastic efforts of Jorge, again, and Halil. Unfortunately, Madison could not hold onto the two goal lead for more than a few seconds when they allowed a cheap equalizer. The game could have gone either way at this point but then disaster struck when Madison contrived to score an own goal to put themselves 5-4 down. Then with only a couple of minutes left on the clock our old friend, the referee blunder, re-appeared to allow a misplaced kickout to be slammed back into the net for their 6th goal on the night. A tough defeat but it could have gone either way until our defense caved. The great play by Carlos and Jorge was the highlight of the game.

Crazy Goals Sink Guilford!

Another great win for the Celts last night against one of the ubiquitous Guilford teams...... this one used to be called Branford...... The Madison team stormed to a thoroughly deserved 3-0 lead at half time aided by two great goals by Halil. The second half started off a bit shakily with the loss of a goal but once the Madison team regained their shape they began to dominate the game again. The game was then put out of reach by two super crazy goals from first Carlos and then Henrique.

Carlos received a long high ball as he ran into the opposition box and he outrageously back heeled the ball into the net on the volley.... if that's possible! But this goal was trumped by Henriques' goal when he got the ball in in his own half looked up and saw the goalie off his line and cracked a shot right over his head into the net! A well deserved 5-1 victory for the Celts!

Indoor Season Starts With Double Header!

Well, the long holiday break is over and we had to get back into action on the soccer field at some point but it was with a double header against Durham and Madison Crisis!

The first game was really tough as everyone tried to get back into the habit of running and passing while trying to breathe. How can you do all of that at the same time?? Durham were the opponents and like last year they proved to be tough opposition. Madison fell behind early but fought back to get their noses in front only to lose two stupid goals to end the half 3-2 down. The second half was similar to the first with wayward passing and lots of missed chances. Having got even again Madison fell to another two soft goals and spent the last 5 minutes chasing to get two goals to at least grab a draw but only one more goal could be claimed as Madison fell to a 5-4 loss. So a first game loss but some positives; Drew made a credible debut for the Celts and the team got a chance to get rid of the festive cobwebs.

After a quick 3 minute turn around the next opposition up was Madison Crisis and immediately we could see that this game would have a different outcome. After a cautious start Madison roared into 4-0 lead and kept their superiority throughout the game finally winning 8-4. The only other point of note was the fabulous goal scoring effort by Johnaldo who threw off his first game lethargy to slam in 4 goals against The Crisis!
