Guilford Celtic is a Connecticut based team playing in the Shoreline Adult Soccer League since 2010. The team was formed in 2003 and played in the Connecticut Adult Recreational Soccer League for 7 years. In 2017 we changed our name from Madison to Guilford Celtic! The team is inspired by Glasgow Celtic FC...probably the greatest football team on the planet!

Good Morning All-
ReplyDeleteI have successfully recruited a new player. A bit out of shape, but working on it, says he's a good utility player and also says he's not much a forward. He's not a goaltender. He is looking forward to the after match festivities already...
What info do we need to get from him so he is signed up in time to play? And to whom do we send this information?
Rob, thats good news. Tom or Behrooz are the people that can answer the registration question......We need a few more players to start feeling like we have a squad again!
ReplyDeleteScotlan beat Macedonia yesterday 2-0 which means they still have an outside chance of moving to the next stage of qualification ( I know it's not Brazil vs Argentina but...
ReplyDeleteSo i got this complicated scenario from cElticquicknews to explain how Scotand can qualify....they play Holland this Wednesday!
"If Scotland lose to the Netherlands on Wednesday and there is a winner in the Norway v Macedonia match, Scotland finish 3rd and are out.
If Scotland were to manage a draw on Wednesday, they would be guaranteed 2nd spot on 11 points, regardless of what happens in Norway.
If the Netherlands win and Norway draw with Macedonia, Scotland finish 2nd on 10 points.
If Scotland finish 2nd on 10 or 11 points, they certainly can make the qualifiers, but it would depend on at least one of the other 2nd placed nations having fewer points, or the same points but an inferior goal difference.
If Scotland were to somehow beat the Netherlands, they would finish 2nd on 13 points and would almost certainly make the play-offs.
Here is the current league table of 2nd placed nations:
1.Russia 12 points GD 8
2.Croatia 11 points GD 3
3.France 11 points GD 1
4.Greece 10 points GD 3
5.Ireland 10 points GD 2
6.Scotland 10 points GD -4
7.Bosnia 9 points GD 8
8.N Ireland 8 points GD -1
9.Hungary 7 points GD 1
NB. The above table, with the exception of Scotland (Group 9) excludes games against the nation at the bottom of each group, so all nations will have a total of 8 games included. This is because Groups 1 to 8 have 6 nations while Group 9 has only 5.
The names of the nations listed above may change as other nations move up into 2nd place as results come in.
The nation finishing in 9th place loses out on the playoffs."
Rob,
ReplyDeleteSent pdf copy of new players license to Tom. He should also send two small pictures to his address. To get exact information call Tom he usually takes care of new players information. His cell phone is 203-500-7412
One of my college buddies is planning to move to Madison later this fall. He played varsity for UMASS excellent player. He is 47 but in better shape than a 27 year old. Runs couple of marathons a year. We hopefully have him for next spring. i am keeping my figures crossed.
ReplyDeleteel gato...thats good....keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteWe are scheduled to play against Southington FC this Sunday (AWAY game) and appears to be the carbon copy of the last season's game. Possibly, there might be some changes to our schedule but I will let you know as soon as I have that information.
ReplyDeleteWe can meet at the Madison Circle at 8:40 am (pizza parking) if interested to carpool and let me know in advance please. Jorge, Enrique and Carlos will meet me at the Circle.
Hamid is in charge of Beer duty this time because he missed his turn last time.
The game is at Southington Park Rec. and let me know if going there directly or meeting me at the Madison Circle.
Thanks
I'll be going direct Tom
ReplyDeletesee you all there
Fellow Teamates:
ReplyDeleteIt is with great regret that I announce the retirement of "Del Pie" from competitive (and sometimes not so competitive) soccer. I will try to come to watch your home matches. You're a great group of guys and I will miss the team. Good luck and thanks for the fun.
Ron B.
sorry to hear that Ron…..it's been fun….keep following the fun on the blog! ….. but it now looks like our team is going through a major transition with you, Tom J, and Erik retiring and Gogglito playing some other weird sport…..we need to do something drastic to make sure the team is viable going forward…..
ReplyDeletethe celtics will live on
ReplyDeletei hope so!
ReplyDeleteThe question is, do we now, currently, have enough players to field a team?.....assuming that on any given weekend 2, 3, or 4 players are
ReplyDeleteunavailable due to injuries, travel, other responsibilties, etc. My math
tells me 'no'
...through the season we have 8 or 9 regulars that seem to show for every game....we then have 4-5 players that either show up on the day or not....and you never know until they do or not.....i would guess that our actual playing pool is down to below viable.... we need to either recruit 5 more players or merge with another team......any other ideas?
ReplyDeleteWe either recruit 4 to 5 players, of some quality, quickly, which I believe to be a very slim possibility, or we merge asap, or we each individually
ReplyDeletebail to other teams. Going through another season hoping each
Thursday-Saturday that we'll have sufficient numbers to field a team isn't something that we should have to deal with week in and week out.
... I agree.... I can't imagine we are the only team that suffers from this problem.....if we made an approach to one of those teams to merge then we could solve the problem overnight....The Guilford Hawks aren't exactly bursting with players...maybe we should approach them? We could become Guilford Celtic...or Madison Hawks....you know what name I would pick..... Tom what do you think?
ReplyDeleteI am going direct too
ReplyDeleteDo we have enough players?
ReplyDeleteNo guess work please. Either we have 12 or 13 or not
I agree as well. We can't continue to struggle fielding a team each week. I am very open to the Guilford idea.
ReplyDeleteBehrooz
ReplyDeleteThis is what the current Fall pool looks like:
Kevinho ( out for the Fall )
Gogglito ( out for the fall )
El Gato ( available, if not injured)
BOR ( available )
Pink ( available )
Johnaldo ( available)
Danny ( don’t know…are you available? )
Hamid ( available? )
Del Pie ( retired )
Tom J ( Retired )
Fribeka ( available )
Roniildo ( available )
Tom A ( available )
Jodinho ( available )
Carlos ( available )
Jorge ( available)
Enrique ( don’t know)
Scott ( available)
10 for sure, 1 if not injured, 3 if they turn up…. the rest retired or gone somewhere…. is this list correct or did I miss someone??
When assessing the list of availability, keep in mind that on any given week several players who are listed as 'available' are, in fact, unavailable.
ReplyDeleteyes, this is the best possible case scenario we could see every week.....but you need to assume 4-5 players as no shows each week for whatever reason ( especially away games )
ReplyDeleteI agree we can approach Zac see what he thinks
ReplyDeleteWho's their manager? If it's Zach, then fine, but we (our captain or
ReplyDeletemanager) should be speaking to their manager.
Let's be realistic, you really have 11 players if they commit to show up every weekend without missing one and no sub
ReplyDeleteYour math and assessment skills are well-honed.....
ReplyDeleteAvailabe does not mean they show up every game. Everyone on your available list misses atleast a game or two each season. Therefore, you do not have a full team and forget about even having a sub to rely on.
ReplyDeleteI can contact Zac right away to see even the option could be on the table. We need all to confirm a merger if we are going that route
yes, if you have been following the flow of the conversation you will see that Jody and I have already said this…..the list below is the "best possible scenario"….every week we have 4-5 players who do not or cannot make the game! so,….we need more players!
ReplyDeleteWith the possiblity of forming a team with 20-22 players there comes the risk that some people may not play as much. That fact should be recognized and accepted, or we try to go another path.
ReplyDeleteI have recruited a new player who will add to the mix. I am also working on another player to add, but probably not before the weekend.
ReplyDeleteYOU MEAN I MIGHT BE A WATERBOY AGAIN????
ReplyDeleteI think we should play with our current roster and regroup next year! We only have 10 games or so on the fall schedule.
ReplyDeleteBefore rushing to a decision - Lets get an official tally for this Sunday (with Rob maybe adding a player to the list), then everybody should tell honestly how many games they'll be available this Fall.
I'll meet you at the field this Sunday
, I could not have said it better myself. I think we ought to muddle through this fall season and regroup come the spring when Tim, Kevin and maybe Tom J can return. We can use this season to recruit more players to the undeniable attraction of the Hoops.
ReplyDeleteYou should be grateful for the glory you've experienced by having actually played a few games.....ah, yes, you'll look back some day and cherish those neat own-goals you had.......
ReplyDeleteah yes, i will remember those goals for ever!
ReplyDeleteIf that's the path, then I think everyone should follow your lead, Rob, and try to get a recruit or two on the field with us.....asap!
ReplyDeleteI will meet you at the circle BUT would like you to confirm that we will have enough players. Otherwise I will go to my son's SCP game.
ReplyDeletecan we come too?
ReplyDeleteI think that’s the realistic view of what we have to do....too late to do anything now because the Fall season starts on Sunday but we should have someone start talking to Guilford or whoever about merging unless we suddenly find a rich seam of new players...... maybe Cap'n Roniildo should talk to their Cap'n?
ReplyDeleteso far we have me, you, Rob, Behrooz, Jody, Fribeka and Tom A….Tom mentions Carlos, Jorge and Enrique in his e-mail but I don’t know if that means that they are confirmed…he also mentions Hamid bringing the beer….don't know if that is confirmed either
ReplyDelete…if all the above werwe confirmed we have 11 players so far….
I second the motion to have Capt. Ron approach Guilford!
ReplyDeleteThird it
ReplyDeleteEnrique moved back to Brazil, no? He said he was moving in August.
ReplyDeleteGuys,
ReplyDeleteI am only sending this email to players their email on a regular basis. Guys, there is no reason for panic. From time to time, every team goes through some rough time and I have seen this similar situation with other teams such as Clinton, Guilford, Milford, Southington and Killingworth.
I see a lot of talk about merging with Guilford team. First of all, Guilford has a roster of more than 20 at least and doesn't make sense to us to combine the two teams, unless if you are planning to watch the game from the bench rather than actually playing the game. So this is not a viable solution for us as a team...... and plus the schedule is already out and it would be very tough for the league to redo the whole schedule in just few days before the first game of the season.
Second, I have just signed up the new player Jerry Shadel (Rob's friend) and Rob is also working on another player. I have also have a new Player whom I am going to meet today and plus Hamid's friend who is a Madison resident and interested to play with us. So we are going to have 3 new players and I will be working for more myself as well.
Let me know if you know of any good player that can join us.
So, please relax and there is no reason for panic.....we might play some games without subs this season but as a team, we need to continue recruiting for new players in order to have a comfortable roster once again.
Panic is a sudden fear which dominates or replaces thinking and often affects groups of people or animals. Panics typically occur in disaster situations, or violent situations (such as robbery, home invasion, a shooting rampage, or loss of several of your team mates etc.) which may endanger the overall health and viability of the affected group. ...
ReplyDeleteWe are not going contact the Guilford team......there is no reason for panic.....read the email I sent before
ReplyDeleteAll you big corporate-trained people think of merging as the first solution!! lol
ReplyDeleteCould you provide a short (20-30 page) narrative on the body's physiology of panic (with psychological changes)...including possible societal impacts?
ReplyDeleteI think we should all panic for a while it is good for blood circulation
ReplyDeleteTom...I want to be crystal clear...there is no panic. It is quite simple actually. There is a core 8-10 players on our roster who play whether at the surf club or new fairfeild, but to be a a competitive team that number needs to be 13-14 (min) for away games or it is not worth it, and for me personally, I would rather play less time and watch from the bench for a committed team. As usual, we are completely unorganized for the start of yet another season. I've heard the recruitment spiel for many seasons, but the data tells a very different story. I would like to try and form a solid committed team between Guilford and Madison. If it ends up that they are unintersted, and have more than enough players for next year, I'll cross that bridge at the time
ReplyDeletehurt my back....getting old....so at this point, I'm out for Sunday.
ReplyDeleteTom, with Ron K. now unable to play, do we have a full squad for Sunday?
ReplyDeleteScott is right. Let's please add up the definite and no guess work. I am sure people have better things to do than driving all the way to Southington finding out only 9 or 10 players there.
ReplyDeleteI'll go, but I must leave immediately after the match.
ReplyDeleteI have to coach at 1PM this fall in Madison.
I am sure Tom J., Tim J., Ron B., Rohan, Erique, and Kevin would appreciate if we do not send more emails to them for this fall, since they are not playing.
ReplyDeletesure…but are we going to be playing?....oops I’m panicking
