It was Saturday, September 5, 1931, the young Celtic goalkeeper John Thomson was playing against his biggest rivals, Rangers, in a crucial game at Ibrox. John was an outstandingly brave goalkeeper who was already being lauded as one of Scotland's greatest goalkeepers. His quick reflexes and ability to block even the hardest of shots had won him international recognition and he was well prepared for a tough game that day. Tragically fate intervened, and the game would be his last. John was renowned for his courage and fearlessness, and his full blooded dive at the feet of the Rangers forward Sam English as the player went to shoot would not have been a surprise to anyone watching. As the Rangers player shot, John Thomson's head took the full blast of the Rangers player's knee, leaving the goalkeeper unconscious, his head bleeding profusely. He never recovered consciousness and died later that evening in hospital. None of the stunned fans who saw this terrible accident would ever forget it, or forget the young unassuming 22 year old who had so much talent but tragically so few years to use it. John was laid to rest in his home town in Fife, in a funeral attended by over 40,000 people. Even after 80 years, John Thomson lives on in the memory of thousands of Celtic supporters paying testament to the simple epitaph on his gravestone;
"They never die who live in the hearts they leave behind."
I wonder of Petyr Cech knew this story...

I think most goalkeepers will have some awareness of the John Thomson story.... that's why you have to be stupid or very brave to be a goalie!

Arrive Friday;…meet up…Car trip to Hopeman leaving about 11am/mid day

Saturday; Massive breakfast!
Head to tournament, win it! Head back to hotel ( without crashing!)
Get all fancied up for evening dance. Drink to oblivion
Sunday;Massive breakfast!!
Head to survivors game at midday ‘ish….. BOR goes fishing again…wtf??
Chillax in the afternoon/ Maybe bar b q or drinking in the caravan park till oblivion sets in again
Monday; Massive breakfast!!!
Start the trip back to Glasgow, stopping at McKay’s to apologize for previous visit
El Gato's suggestion is to try and get to Celtic park that afternoon for tour and or shopping… This is doable if we are organized in the morning (LOL!!)
Monday night in EK drinking or seeing my mom..Or both
El gato heads to London
Tuesday; Either Celtic Park in the morning ( if we didn’t do it the afternoon before) or head to Edinburgh
Night out in Edinburgh…..drink to oblivion…. except BOR? who has to head back to Glasgow that night so he can catch a flight the next day
Wednesday; head back to Glasgow/EK…. Possible game to play in the evening….champions league games on TV..choices... choices!
Thursday Back to US of A....with a headache
Great agenda! Though I think it is a bit heavy on the activities sandwiched in between the massive breakfasts and drinking to oblivion parts!!
ReplyDeleteWinning the tourney may be controversial, and (possibly) out of reach given the talent we saw last year. I'd be happy with 2nd or 3rd!!
We have a plan.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to winning the tourney + the challenge match, catching some fish and surviving the trips to oblivion...
.....whatever became of sam english? got to feel for him, as that 2 secs stayed with him for the rest of his life...
ReplyDeleteluv the Hopeman agenda..LOL! My goal is to survive the survivers game this year :-) Stay away from very large RAF defenders on Saturday...
.......records indicate we are still 3rd, behind GBC. thought we were 1 point ahead after our victory against them?
ReplyDelete.......i could go a McKay's steak pie and beer right now...fine way to start or end any day! Can't wait boys.......
ReplyDelete.....r we limo pooling to EWR again this year?
ReplyDeleteSam English; by the end of that tragic season English had scored 44 goals (still a record for a Rangers player) and he had also won a couple of Northern Ireland caps but despite his exploits he could not forget that fateful moment and his play began to suffer as his heart was not in it. A move to Liverpool was hoped might give him a fresh start but limited success saw him return to play for Queen of the South before finishing his career at Hartlepool at the age of 28. He died in Vale of Leven Hospital of motor neurone disease on April 12th 1967 aged 58.

ReplyDeleteTo All SASL Managers
ReplyDeleteThis Sunday is 9/11. The CSSA has requested all games before the start, observe a minute of silence in remembrance of that fatefull day.
Managers please notify the match officials of this request.
Folks,
ReplyDeleteAll games postponed from 8/28 will be moved to the end of the schedule, 11/6. O-40 D3 games will have to be made up prior to this as games are scheduled that day.
As always, you can play games ahead of schedule. Labor day and Columbus day are options however, be aware, there are a multitude of youth tournaments and referees will be scarce and may not be available.
*If you and your opponent would like to play this weekend, I need to know ASAP or sooner!!
Thank you in advance,
Mike Schechter
