MATCH REPORT; Madison 6 North Branford 2

If there is a really tough way to win a game then Madison Celtic will find it! On paper this match should have been a relatively easy win for the Celts. And the end result of a 6 2 win would imply that's exactly what happened but if you had joined the game after ten minutes you would have seen a home team 2-0 down after two howlers and struggling to get a foothold in the match.

North Branford set about the game with a brisk focus, clearly intent to ruffle the Madison defence. And how easy that was ! The game had barely started when a simple break down the Madison left was followed by a missed tackle, an exposed goalie and a simple shot into the net. If that was bad the second was worse! Another simple break then a fairly weak shot from the edge of the Madison box saw the Hulk scrambling to stop the ball and a slow motion car crash attempt at a save as the ball squirmed under his arm and rolled over the line. Two nil down and a mountain to climb. To the credit of the Celts they responded by switching on the after burners and really punishing the Branford defence. Tano was central to most of the action up front and started a sparkling performance on the day by bursting through the visitors defence getting a shot on target only to see the goalie parry the ball but right into the path of Talat who slammed the ball into the net. The comeback was on! Shortly after this breakthrough another marauding run down the right by Talat was finished off by Jorge who timed his run into the box perfectly to meet the inch perfect pass from the right and thumping the ball into the net for the equalizer. The demoralized Branford team knew at that point they were in trouble and that was confirmed when the superb Tano showing some great individual skills to elude the last defender and curl in a superb shot from a about 25 yards out to take the lead. The Celts were in total control at this point and emphasized the point when Halil dribbled past a couple of defenders before clinically finishing with a shot that slammed past the goalie to give the Celts a remarkable 4-2 position at half time. The team had played very well during the half with superb movement by Tano, Paulo and Jorge up front ably supported by a strong midfield cohort. Notable performances by Bambi and Ilhan complimented the great driving play of Halil. Once again Jody had a very solid display at the back supporting the unusually fragile Hulk. His only mistake on the day was a superb pass he made to an opposition attacker.... but he managed to "chase down his shame" by getting the ball back!

The second half was an easy stroll for the Celts. The Branford team could not get on the ball and when they did they were closed down by Halil or David in the middle. Any sign of this being a competitive game was snuffed out midway through the second half when Madison got a free kick a few yards outside the Branford box. David set his sights on goal and fired in a stunning swerving shot giving the hapless goalie no chance. Tano then rounded off the day and his own fabulous performance with his second and Madison's 6th goal of the day. The referee put the Branford team out of their misery by signalling the end of the game and a wonderful comeback by Madison.

Man of the Match; Some great performances by Talat, Halil and David on the day but the player in fantastic form and deadly all through the game was Tano!

  14. El Gato, I see that you'll be traveling this week, but I was hoping someone could check with the Town of Madison to verify that the Exchange field is in decent shape for our game this coming Sunday, i.e., grass cut, lines sprayed, goals with nets, etc. We should do this early this week so that we don't have to scramble again Saturday evening prior to the game.

  15. My Kids have started soccer practices for the fall season, and of course, they're on Thursday. Since we have to get 2 kids to 2 different practices at 2 schools, I'm officially screwed from further Thursday practices this fall. Sorry!

  16. Hello All,

This is not really SASL news, but a lot has happened to me since early August and I know many of you have been concerned. I have felt guilty to have not kept you more informed. As the team managers probably all know, I had to be rushed into hospital the evening of August 4th and I have basically been unable to help the SASL Executive Board since then. Mike Schechter and Jim Quirk have basically taken over score reporting and standings updates on a back-up SASL Website. The SASL Website I administer has not been updated since July 18th. I am not sure how well I will be to update the main Website any time soon, but perhaps I can update it slowly from the scores this fall later on. I am so sorry to have let everyone down this summer and fall, but I have been through some sort of hell during this time and I am taking time to recover.

I was rushed into Yale New Haven Hospital on the evening of August 4th and immediately put into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) section of the neuroscience ward. I had an operation on August 5th to insert a magnetic shunt next to my brain to drain off a large amount of hydrocephalus that had built up, putting a large amount of pressure on my brain. I had become extremely ill. This operation was deemed a success and I felt much better and was allowed to go home only a few days later. The shunt redirects hydrocephalus out away from my brain through a tube that runs to my stomach and I excrete the excess fluid that way.

I was rushed back into hospital emergency department the evening of August 12th when I had strained something which caused a massive haemorrhage in my brain. I was immediately rushed back to the neuroscience ICU where I remained for a few days while I stabilised.. It was decided to operate on me again (a second time) to remove the shunt and allow my fluids to run out through an I.V. The doctors were waiting for blood to clear from my fluids. This was a particularly dangerous time and I was in much pain.

After my fluids had cleared and I had stabilised, I needed a third operation to put in a brand-new shunt for fear that my old one had become clogged. So, I was in the ICU for a few more days. Eventually, I was moved into a regular ward for the last week of August. I had been bed-ridden for so long (most of August), I had lost about 20 lbs and my legs were so skinny my muscles were pretty much useless. I had to learn to walk again, but just enough to be allowed home on Friday, August 26th.

Saturday night Hurricane Irene hit and our house lost power and running water for 7 days (we have a well system). It was a very difficult time and only just coming out of hospital as well. So, I have been extremely weak and not up to doing much on a computer, I tire very easily.

In all this time I have received many "get well" cards, emails and Facebook messages from you. While I was in hospital my dear wife would read the cards and the messages on the computer. I was stunned by the number of comments of concern and support on Facebook during my near three week stay in hospital. I finally caught up with the emails FB sends one when someone adds a comment, I read them all. I couldn't believe I had so many friends caring about me. I don't know how to thank so many people. So many comments from all around the world from my RamsNet friends as well, left me very emotional. My dear wife would read them all to me when she visited, and as she said it really did lift me up to hear them all. It was as if you had all come into my room to visit personally. I shall never forget that.

  17. Apologies for a long email, but I just wanted to get the word out what has really happened to me. It's taking me some time to recover. Please, if you send me an email in response to this one, please remember I will probably receive so many I will not be able to respond to each individual, it will be too exhausting, but I dearly appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. I do believe they really did help during my dark days in hospital.

Good luck to all for the rest of the season.

    Cheers,
    - Garry

  18. Courtesy of the CSSA State Cup Committee, attached is the application for this year's State Cup ( 2011-2012)

Because of the illness of CSSA Web Admin Garry Archer, the application will not be posted on the CSSA website. Instead, we ask all leagues to forward this e-mail to your teams, and post on your websites, ASAP.

There are many changes to this upcoming season's competition referenced on the application - please note:

    * CSSA will accept women's team applications and will run a women's tournament(s) if entries warrant.
    * We wish to increase the number of men's O-50 Cup applications from last year's five, to at least eight.
    * We'd also like to see more men's O-30 applications.
    * Cup rosters must be included with application.
    * Guest players have been eliminated from eligibility, but "non-league" teams (which can be comprised of existing CSSA registered players, or teams, and/or unaffiliated players) may enter by posting a performance bond.
    * Players must be "of age" or age-eligible at the start of the competition. Teams may not place underage field players on rosters, prior to the start of the competition, who then become age-eligible during the competition.
    * Only two round robin matches will be played this fall, and the same roster will be used for these two matches - no changes allowed between round-robin matches 1 and 2.
    * Rosters will then be frozen in the early spring for the remainder of the competition - round robin match 3, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. This is to facilitate the change in the SASL schedule.
    * The CSSA Cup Finals will be played on a Saturday in June, usually the second Saturday. *Do not* enter the competition if you do not want to, or cannot, play on this Saturday. Check all the playing dates, especially the knockout phase dates in the spring, to ensure you can field a team at that point. The Cup Committee will not likely entertain deviating from the spring knockout phase schedule.
    * Please read the e-mail attached below regarding existing cup policy and Competition Rules.

Read the application carefully. Contact Jack Testani, State Cup Committee Chairman, Rich Reddington, or Steve Henderson, Committee members, with any questions. Please get your applications in ASAP, and we look forward to another good cup competition this coming season.
