NEXT GAME; Sunday 27th June, Southington FC

What a great week for the USA in the World Cup! Some really exciting games and great goals and now it's our turn to show what we can do on the field of play! We have a home game this Sunday against Southington FC at the Town Campus field. Looks like we have about 12 confirmed players so far but still to hear from a few.

This is another important game for us. While we were sitting relaxing last Sunday both of our closest rivals, Woodbridge and Bridgeport, won their games to push us into third place in the league. Woodbridge have 18 pts after 8 games, Bridgeport 18 points after 7 games and we have 17 points after 7 games. Very tight at the top! The good news is that Woodbridge and Bridgeport play each other this weekend so one or both of these teams will lose points. We are up against Southington FC. Both Southington teams are struggling a bit this year but this particular team will be out for revenge after their season opening home defeat to us. Let's take the game very seriously. No points ( or pints! ) are won until the end of the game , and the match against New Fairfield told us that being near the bottom of the league does not mean they can't hurt us!
We still need a beer volunteer for the game! Also, USA are playing against Ghana on Saturday so it would be fun to meet up and watch it together. Maybe a better bar than the last one?

  7. I have two questions
    1) I played just once like 1 year ago on that field (Town Campus field) I was looking for directions on the link in this blog but is nothing there about Town Campus field but I find in the website and is in Hammonassett park is that correct?
    Question 2)
How is that field? is a nice or how is it?
    See you Sunday.

  8. Tano,

Exit 62, left at bottom of the ramp coming from New Haven. Go north for about about 1/4 mile and the Town Campus/Town Hall is on your right hand side

  15. Humphrey's...I think I have been there once and I wasn't impressed with it at all...I think Duddys or Chips in Clinton with big screen TV will probably be a better choice....or I remember Jody talked about going to New Haven to that sport's bar

  16. I'm 50/50, yet again...This time it's a nasty bronchitis. Hopefully will be back on my feet by Sunday. Are the field directions posted somewhere--not the same field as last time sounds like... Also, I'm up for beer duty next time I'm a definite--hopefully game after this one...

  20. Tom... i've only ever seen a small TV in Doodys.... do they have a big screen?

    Same with Chips....

    ReplyDelete
  21. Duddys has one big screen TV, one interm. size and another smaller size by the the entrance. We have been there so many times, don't you remember? The big screen TV is by the pop corn stand...

  24. Dejan Play? and coaching us?
what happen last time did some one doesn't like it?
    because we are 16
I don't have a problem for subbing time, but will be good to have some one in charge with some idea of it, obvious.
Otherwise some one will be whine about playing time.

  25. TANO.. some of the guys on the list are either semi injured, coughing their guts up or testing their groin out for the first time... so we shoud be ok with the numbers

Not many replies on the USA Ghana watching....

So far Tom, me and BOR? What do you think about doodys?

  26. Wow! 16 players with potentially El FLaco, Tim $ Tom to join in the mix = 19!! Maybe I should go play my hockey game at 4PM instead!!! But since I miss you guys and It is a home game which means that all our fans will turn out :o)

  27. Germany vs England at 10am
I can bring a 32" flat TV but we need some one have HTC sprint phone with ESPN TV? to watch the game ?
or wireless router to watch in the laptop ?
is not the same watching in DVR and after our game. Everybody want to watch Mexico vs Argentina and they would said something about the result of England vs Germany.
Or I just stay at home we are too many for this Sunday you probably don't need me at all.
Can I stay Tom, John, Ronie and Gato? or we can we organize something with our modern technology?

    ReplyDelete
  28. TANO... not sure we can fix up a technology solution for the field so quickly...and wouldn't it be a distraction?

I'm going to DVR the game.... rush home and watch it well before the Argentina game starts

Round of 16 has some really interesting games.... hopefully none as boring as the Brazil Portugal game yesterday!

  29. Where are we meeting for the USA match today?

Doody's is OK, Chips in Clinton is OK...

I've asked my local bar expert for the best location, but he doesn't go to the bars to watch TV... he throws darts, plays billiards, etc...

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi BOR.... we have not exactly had an overwhelming response to go and watch the game! Maybe the USA England game used up everybodys "can i go out to play" cards. Not sure how good the TV's are for these game but i have a nice HD tv and beer so you and Tom are welcome to come to my place. I can send you my address by email

I'm sticking my neck out and going for Argentina but they are in a tough bracket....the round of 16 is the big test!

I will do a poll when we get to the last 8 but people can place their predictins now!

  37. An interesting analysis from the Celtic Quick News Blog;

"Since 1962 teams reaching the World Cup Final have followed a simple formula: they have either been:

    Brazil, (West) Germany, Italy, or
    The host nation, or
The Dutch team from the 1970s, Diego Maradona's Argentina, or Raymond Domenech's France.

We often hear about four top nations but in truth there are only three. Brazil, Italy and Germany. Argentina have only reached a final as hosts or when Diego Maradona managed to work his unique magic. Without home advantage or Diego they consistently underachieve.

It is difficult to overstate what the Dutch did with the game in the 1970s. In the 1960s Dutch football was a joke, Luxembourg knocked them out of the 1964 European Championships, but as the decade ended they reinvented the game and "Total-football" took the world to school. Four consecutive European Cup wins and two successive World Cup finals, both lost to host nations.

That Dutch team, with and without Johan Cruyff, deserve their place at the top table alongside Maradona, Germany, Italy and Brazil, but only that Dutch team, since the 70s they have been a World Cup side-show.

All of which leaves us with an interesting conclusion. Raymond Domenech's France, who lost the 2006 World Cup Final on penalties, are the only team outside a very select group of the games titans, and teams with home advantage, who have reached a World Cup Final since 1962.

    This infers a few projections:

Spain will not win the World Cup, neither will Portugal, Argentina or any of the other outside bets. The hosts are out, as are Italy, and Domenech failed to keep the reins on his slightly mad thoroughbreds.

48 years of form says Brazil and Germany will contest the World Cup Final. As European countries have only ever won in Europe, it looks like it's Brazil's trophy this year"
