La Boca was silent, his head bowed, strangely still. "Are you OK Danny?" I asked. He slowly turned to meet my question. "Dude, we should have won that game.....what the Hell happened?" Now, I was silent.....
A game that Madison had in the bag squirmed away from them in the last minute when a very rare Southbury attack ended with the ball nestling in the back of the Madison net for a cruel and undeserved equalizer. Madison should have had this game wrapped up in the first half after a frenetic fast paced start to the game which saw the Celts peppering the Southbury goal with several shots on target. Halil and Tano were moving the ball well at this stage of the game and the Southbury defense were clearly struggling to contain them. Even with a strong gusting wind blowing in their direction the Madison team were making most of the notable power plays but unfortunately not making the most of their possession. Even though the season is still at its early stages, a worrying pattern is beginning to emerge for Madison...... an inability to score when on top! Even with strong possession in midfield and very robust and commanding defending, Madison were still unable to convert their favourable stats into a lead. After thirty minutes the game started to even out and the first tell tale signs that the Madison forwards and some of the midfield were beginning to run out of steam began to appear; walking instead of running, pointing instead of tackling, talking instead of thinking! However, just when it looked like the Celts were starting to struggle Tano fired in a great shot that hit the bar and after a bit of 'ping pong' in the box the ball rebounded to Arnie who slotted it into the net for a Madison lead. Another fantastic shot by Tano that had the Southbury goalie desperately scrambling across the goal nearly made it two but the half finished with a dominant Celtic team one up.
Predictably, the raging first half wind eased to a gentle mocking breeze just before the start of the second half preventing Madison from taking advantage of firing high balls into the box. Not that they managed to get many crosses in. More often than not, their slow as molasses play found one, two and on one glorious occasion, three of the Madison forwards caught in offside positions! Luckily for Madison the Celtic defenders were, once again, in superb form, holding the line and stopping any attempted breakaways before they even got going. Roniildo in particular was in exceptional form defending, tackling, running into space and making great passes.....probably his best game in a Celtic shirt! La Boca, as ever, was all controlled passion and the heartbeat of the team and Telat rarely missed a tackle. Jodingo!! was also throwing himself into the fray taking a blast to the face without missing a beat.
As the game edged towards the end of the 90 minutes the match was finely balanced with Southbury taking advantage of some very poor passing by Madison and putting together some reasonable possession play, though with little penetration. Erratic substitutions by Celtic really affected the balance of the team at this point in the game and you could feel the tide turning ever so slightly in the favor of Southbury. With a minute left calamity hit the Celtic defence as a ball through the middle was headed on to the Madison right side where an on rushing and unmarked Southbury striker collected the ball in his stride and hit a superb shot past the goalie. Bruce had no chance with the shot but the build up play by Southbury should have been snuffed out before the move reached its awful conclusion. The goal knocked the wind out of the team and the ball was barely back in play before the whistle sounded to end the game on a sour note for Celtic. It was a particularly tough ending for the Madison defence after such a strong performance and it clearly left them feeling robbed.
La Boca was silent, his head bowed.......
MAN OF THE MATCH; Roniildo... a player at the top of his game mentally and physically! Fantastic play by Roniildo who is really revelling in his new role just in front of La Boca.
May I have a word?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all thank you guys for been at the Mothers days and on time.
That was our first goal with out players not fun,(are you agree?)
We was 14 friendly players at time.
Then, next goal for me was, not injured players of both teams, that was good too, consider that was an over 40 game and a crazy #10 with to much caffeine or any ine on his system.(not you Tom The other #10
I like to have a happy times with all of you beside the final score, because what happen if lose? is just a game and lose is one of the choices so getting mad at our ages? hahaha, do we comeback to High school now?
Hey don't get me wrong I like to Win but I consider too the this is a recreational league. Don't get to serious I said to they #4.Just have Fun Men!.
But today we have a few issues to made our victory come true.
One of the reason was, the we have no Referee. That was more like a New yorker comedian cop directing the traffic at rush hour.
Also we playing in the Jungle so no legs in the second half plus weak passes and confused field lines.
We were unlucky too Hallil have his chance and was the "almost" day for him and for me too. I wish my right foot get well soon.
So if you put all those reasons together the final score doesn't reflect the work what we did.
without offence any one. Did you see my Turkey for next thanksgiving? it was in the field today.
Can some one explain the rules about outside next time? Did we play with it?
Thanks.:o)
John thank you for your comments nice job.
Btw: The goal was by a corner kick from Tom A. and I header to the goal area and Hallil header too and after a couple bounce Arni nail it, kind of close.
About La Boca runaway:
He didn't get mad because the score.
I think he have the perfect excuse to coming back soon with Ronaldo at Mother days, but I understand, the pressure of this question early in the morning: "what time you coming back honey?
Am I right? or was Ronaldo under pressure?
Thank you Bambi for the beers.
We have to get the numbers on the shirt, may be an issue if some referee wants to.
We get lucky today.
EL Gato Shirts Rock.
Cheers!
Another fabulous blog post, surely better crafted (and crafty) than our play yesterday, but an away tie is never a bad thing--and lots of near misses that could have found home with a little less wind/cold/shorter pitch....(and 20 fewer candles)... I know I had fun despite the outcome. Arnie (not Annie)..
ReplyDeletesorry Tano.... missed all of the people in the goal mouth scramble! I remember you and then Arnie....hey i'm way back in defence!
ReplyDeleteThe height of the grass was awful....at one point in the game several of our forwards dissapeared in it ;o)
Great report John as usual. I am glad atleast my new Celtic jersey cheered you guys up. That should balance my weak playing.... I only get better with age like a good French cheese...
ReplyDeleteI'm beer wench this week!
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of which, I think we should consider ushering in a new policy....if you play well, you are entitled to as many beers as you like. If you play poorly, you are only entitled to watch the others drink. And, of course, cheerleaders (female)and the official team photographer are also welcome to drink to their satisfaction!
did anyone plow through the 'raw footage" from last weeks game against Southington? The fastest player on the field was ......Bambi!!
ReplyDeleteI think the photographer has given up on us after confusing her with a guy.....
ReplyDeleteEl Gato
ReplyDelete.....French cheeses are smelly but good!
That's too bad, I was impressed with some of her abilities....
ReplyDeleteReminder, this coming weekend will be my last game for a month (back June 20th, hopefully).
La Gata, I'd say you're more like American cheese....don't smell bad, but aren't good.
ReplyDeleteJK!
I'm sure she will be back..... our middle aged features and range of physical shapes allow her to cast fantastic shades and contrast into her photos......all those rolls of fat and wrinkles...it's really an art project for her.... i think her photos will end up in some sort of Art Gallery showing the Male Form in Decline........
ReplyDeleteJohnaldo, I know it is like a broken record (showing my age of course), but yet another excellent and incisive dissection of Sunday's proceedings.
ReplyDeleteIf we can start to hit the back of the net with half the chances we are creating, we'll win a lot of games comfortably. Should have been 5-1 today, and that's beeing generous to them.
Really enjoying my new role in, but big test next weekend, as Goggelitto returns to the defensive squad.
Judgey...what happened to you? Hope your OK, but had you as IN for the Boomers clash? Did you experience a little late presure from the Mrs on MDay! Call Tom, John or myself, even if it is last minute, so we don't worry about you!
Hey Ruby, I was under pressure to be to be on time for Mother's Day Brunch. It was really good...lots of steak, salmon, chicken, and plenty of beer and wine!
test
ReplyDeleteanonymous....what are you testing?
ReplyDeleteit was me...big delay in posting my last message, so just checking that all was OK with my PC
ReplyDeleteRoniildo.....You had ur wife cook all that food on Mother's Day!?!? You should be ashamed!
ReplyDeleteyou must be joking....over at the Oweenego brunch!
ReplyDeleteArniesto, we'rer away at the Yellow Jackets next Sunday! Ready to rumble with your old team. We need some tactical insight from you early this week to help us prepare....
ReplyDeleteJohnaldo don't be sorry you did great report I was close to them so. I just want to help you in some details.
ReplyDeleteRonildo:
Hey, that Sounds more fun than our after match bar, just 7 guys staid, and without our party coordinator it was a little be quiet(la Boca we missed you).
Tano, love the Maradona icon!
ReplyDeleteHaven't given up on you guys...yet....but if I get confused with a man again, I might!
ReplyDeleteMale Art Form in Decline? I think not....my photos clearly show how athletic you all are.
I am hoping that last comment will get me some beers next time, since I won't be playing and will not be able to just watch others drink. Will come with camera in hand though to earn me keep!
John-great match report...it was like I was there!
well, i did see a telephoto lens sticking out of the bushes...are you sure that wasn't you?

ReplyDeleteJodingo!! You're right...could have been a gun after all your comments to her ;o)
ReplyDeleteThere is an imposter....the last comment by "Jodingo!!" re. the telephoto lens wasn't posted by me!
ReplyDeleteNo way? Ha! ...and I thought that was a perfect Jodingo!! comment.... ok bloggers.... there is only one Jodingo!!.....no copy cats or Gatos please
ReplyDeleteMs. Annie, Bring your camera and a few lenses......and, yes, as I already offered in my very apologetic state, your beer(s) will be cold and freely provided.
ReplyDeleteJodingo!! you and your lenses
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping that one day soon Ms. Susan B. will make a surprise visit to one of our matches to lift our....spirits!
ReplyDeleteshe is on a big singing tour right now! maybe when she hits Hartford?
ReplyDeleteSorry Jodingo!! couldn't stop myself. promise never to impost you again
ReplyDeleteGood reporting John but I thought it was a little bit harsh. I agree we should have won the game but the reasons for not winning the game are:
ReplyDelete1. As a team, we always get tired toward the second part of the second half. This resulted in sloppy passing, losing possesion (given up the ball too quickly without thinking or understanding where the ball is going or intended for, making many passes not to the feet causing to lose possesion, and not moving into open space quick enough due to lack of fitness.
2. The defensive line played really well except for one mistake that happened in the last 3 minutes of the game and that costs us a tie and not a win.
3. We had few good opportunities to score more but were unable to put the ball in the net and we didn't not really challenged their goalie much and we should do this in future.
4. Also, I have to say the uncut long grass took a beating on us and really made us much tired than the Southbury team and at least there were more familiar with their field than us. This really was a big factor for us in the second half.
Tano, sorry to hear that you are going to miss the game but now you can become the beer watcher now. Hope for a quick recovery.
I will IN.

Johnaldo-I had a brilliant response to your lens/bushes comment (don't know what you were thinking with that!) and the Jodingo!! follow-up, but with the Jodingo!! imposter(Ron).....it loses some impact....laughing quietly to myself....
ReplyDeleteIf I can find my way to Woodbridge I will let you re-pay your debt Jodingo!!
And, I will bring the lenses and be wearing a turtleneck shirt....I'm on to you guys...
I'm probably the worst player on the team
ReplyDeleteI like the name! Iniesta one of my favorites. The Yellow Jacket Low-Down--back to front. Goalie is very shaky. Should test him frequently and look for rebounds. Their center back, Jim, is very strong/physical--will do what it takes to keep you from getting set for shot/pass. Outside backs weaker (depending on who shows). Midfield has trouble getting back--everyone wants to be a forward, though several strong, quick players there if they are healthy. STrikers are solid. One, Joe, is very good in the air and strong if the ball is played right to him, but he won't move to the ball and loses his legs by the second half usually. He's also very easily annoyed and will cry if you bump him. The other, Mahmoud, has a very strong right foot and is quick, but he's only good for a handful of runs a game. He often thinks he can hit from range, but frequently off target. Play him hard shoulder to shoulder and he'll fold (and get mad and whine a lot). Counter attacking will be a good bet and solid head to head defending. This will not be a good passing team, and they're bound to be plenty of long balls and 1v1 runs. I'll give you more of the low-down on the field, and if my sore hamstring loosens up, I'll be there.....
ReplyDeleteArniesto! Great intel on Woodbridge.... they do sound a bit like us though!
ReplyDelete..... sounds like our D will have to be on form and our midfield really tougher! I do get the feeling that our forward line just needs a bit of luck and they could get some goals.....there is also the well known tradition of ex players scoring against their old teams!
The other good thing about your name is that no one will confuse you with Annie now.....and vice versa!
ReplyDeleteTom A.... just read your post....I agree with all of it....and by the sound of it you agree with me! so maybe i'm not so harsh after all?
ReplyDeleteSounds like both Woodbridge strikers can be agitated easily....should be a good matchup with La Boca barking and hassling them!
ReplyDeleteWe will do well if we don't let anyone who is tired stay in the game...
Could be a bit balmy for a turtleneck.
I am in
ReplyDeleteIf everyone plays to their limit and sub when they get tired we do well. We have 10 midfielders, 6 defenders and 4 forward on the team (not including 2/3 goalie). Let's use our subs wisely and not in mass substitutions to create an awkward situation. I think Ron/Labocca from the field and one designated person from sideline should call in appropriate subbing fairly to everyone.
ReplyDeleteJodingo!!, don't think i missed your impost on me last night...me confessing to be the worst player onthe team!
ReplyDeleteAnd Annie, not sure why impact lost from comment just because it came from some guy called Ron...don't know who he is...
According to the long-range weather forcast, it will be sunny in the 80's so choose your apparel accordingly...don't need anyone passing out (unless it is from the beers)
forgot, main point of post was to update the squadfor Sunday...

ReplyDeleteand sorry for calling you Ron (whoever he is )-should use the proper blog names! ;o)
If I make it to take more pics sunday, I'll do the subbing for you guys....I'm a basketball player...it's gotta work the same right? I know, that's football blasphemy I'm sure....
Annie..brilliant idea..you're on as team sub coordiantor...i hear that position pays beaucoup de bieres!
ReplyDeleteFrom Johnaldo report: "Erratic substitutions by Celtic really affected the balance of the team at this point in the game..." summup one of the major problem of our team (apart from not scoring). Central midfielder requires at the least passing skills-vision/ball control/stagmina to move up and back at will (Roniildo alike) - If one cannot sub for a player with at least 2 of these qualities, one should refrain himself from trying to play that position and should ask to move to left or right to accomdate somebody who could.
ReplyDeleteI'm in (unless we turn out to have >18 players -I would hate to miss my son swimming lesson only to play 5-10 minutes/half given the potential that some players will/should not sub out for the right reason)

we will ensure parity in playing time, and we never have 18 players show up. the beauty of the roster now, is that we can end up with 13 or 14 fit players at any given time, similar other teams! nobody who shows up would be on for only 10 minutes. The diversity in the team. If people are worried about playing time, bring personal clocks, iphones whatever to time your personal playing time...i do that for my kid's games, and it is really surprising how fair it turns out to be, even when you have the opposite perception!

ReplyDeleteJohnaldo,
ReplyDeleteBetter break out the water bottle holster belt you've put away from seasons past....
so Jodingo!!...not buying the natural attrition on match day ;o)
ReplyDeleteNope, not this time. The forecast is for a spectacular and glorious day followed by quaffing cervezas in the brazen sun to quench our deserved collective thirst! Who's gonna stay home with mother when that proposition is waved in their face? Okay, maybe Strap (as in Jacques), but the real men (and possibly our assistant substitutor) will show up and be counted!
ReplyDeleteAnd, no, I wasn't the imposter last night.
Add in Todd Forti also to the list. He will be there this Sunday.
ReplyDeleteif 18 show up, parity would mean each player could play an average 55/90 minutes. If we keep the same goalie, average playing time drops slightly to 53 min for field players. If you are woefully under this number, something is wrong or you are out for injury or something else.
ReplyDeleteJodingo!!,so who is the cabbage that thinks I'm the worst player on the team? At least man up and use your own name or refrain from cheap shots ;o)

ReplyDeleteI have to be there men you guys definitely need a beer watcher for this Sunday.
Can some one pick me up?
I'm in New Haven Exit 50 of Fwy.95 we share the gas. please let me know.
I can help the coach too this Sunday and do the subs too (since the I can't play).
I'm positive coaching and I yell to to give enthusiasm if some one need it.
I can speak Spanish too I try to learn some words in Turkish like it: Dikkat(means watch out) or Efendim (means what you said?) and Teşekkür ederim (thank you)and my favorite one is Ben duman hasish isterim(no translation) .
So let me know I bring a clipboard too and the leash for Carlos so we can said: "Unleash the Hell"( a battle command for heavy artillery).
We might have to switch goalie too to get fair play time......
ReplyDeleteI can pick you up Tano.
ReplyDeletewow! busy day on the blog!!
ReplyDelete....Looks like TANO will be our coach, sub cordinator, translator, beer festival organizer and....cheerleader?
As for subbing.... let's organize into subbing pools.... defenders go in for defenders Midfielders for middies etc....we just have to identify who is in what pool?
So, who is a D?
Who is an M?
and Who is an F?
I'm in the D pool...
We also have to make sure we know what position we are subbing in to....if a left middie comes off and you go in, then you can't just wander off to the right hand side of the field or up front! Got to stick to your position.... ideally you would have a coordinator or at least an agreement for subbing in each pool of players..... the Defence do this pretty well....
El Gato .... are you still a goalie or an outfielder? If a goalie then you and Bruce would have to work out a system
ReplyDeleteUnleash the Hell!
ReplyDeleteDejan you have to show up too. This is a great photo opportunity with everyone present. We should take another team photo. This would be the first in 10 years we get 21 people show up for a game. And the only time full squat for photo shot. Also Runnie this is your opportunity to get everyone's signature for the SASL ID Cards. Make sure you have your cards with you.
ReplyDeleteIf we have everyone show up it makes sense I share the goal with Bruce.
ReplyDeleteThis is exciting i am getting chills already.....
ReplyDeleteJodingo we need a Keg now.....
