NEXT GAME; Sunday April 30th vs Norwalk S. C.

Our next game is at home ( Bittner Park ) against Norwalk Sports Colombia with a 10.15am kick off!
We have played this Norwalk team several times in the past and they have always proved to be a stuffy opponent. In fact the last time we played them we were in Div 2 in season 2014 and they hammered us both home and away.  I think we should have revenge in our plans! Match reports below:

Norwalk SC 4 Madison Celtic 1

Madison Celtic 0 Norwalk SC 5

They have won one and lost one in their opening two matches and i think we can once again claim all 3 points with a strong performance!

See you at Bittner!

MATCH REPORT; Guilford Celtic 1 Newington Portuguese 0

Ravi scores the winning goal!

A stunner of a victory for Guilford Celtic against last years unbeaten runaway div 3 champions saw the Celts rise to the top of Division 2! After a debut victory in the first game of the season the Celts followed up with a superb win again tough opponents Newington Portuguese. The Celts fielded a strong starting lineup but found themselves under the cosh for the first fifteen minutes or so of the game. But after that initial onslaught the home team found their way, and their passing, but it was still somewhat against the run of play when they snatched a goal. Poor play by the Newington defense allowed the ever sharp Ravi to latch on to a loose ball, run into the box and unleash an stoppable shot for the go ahead goal. The Celts were boosted by this and their possession surged as they took the game to Newington. The Portuguese outfit struggled to gain back their confidence and were lucky to not be 2 or 3 down by the half as chances came the Celts way. The second half was another strong performance by the Celts as they pressed and pressed the Newington defense. Of course it wasn't all one way traffic and the Guilford back line and goalie had to be alert to shots and probes by the visitors. The Celts had many chances to put this game away as Todd, Ravi, Tano and Edimar all had shots saved, parried, missed or smashed against the bar.  As the game wound down to near the end it looked like the Celts would hold out for a famous victory when calamity struck. Dustin was adjudged to have taken out a player in the box and a penalty was awarded to the visitors. The ball was struck well past Dustin's left hand side but a player encroachment was noticed ( Johnny B! ) and confirmed by the linesman. The ref ordered a retake and the Newington striker blasted the ball high and wide over the bar.
A let off but a much deserved one! The game too an ugly turn when Tano was tripped when clear on goal with the Newington defender shown a straight red for the offense. The Celts held on for the last few minutes of injury time to claim all 3 points and head to the top of the Division 2 table!

Man Of the Match

Some superb performances in defense and midfield but the MOM goes to Ravi for a great overall performance and the match wining goal!

NEXT GAME; Sunday 23rd April vs Newington Portuguese ( H )

Our second game of the season is against fellow promotees Newington Portuguese.

This is a home game at Guilford High School ( Turf Field) with a 10am kick off!

Newington have started their campaign in the 2nd Division with a strong 4 -2 away win against Guilford Bell Curve. As you probably remember they had a great season last year wining the 3rd Division title with no losses and only four dropped points. We played them twice last season with a win and a loss but as you can see in the match reports below, both games were competitive and could have gone either way.

Celtic 0 Newington 0

Newington 1 Celtic 0

So no need to feel inferior to them. Our squad is much stronger than last year and we should expect to grab all 3 points if we play the same way we did in the second half against Southeast Rovers

Match Report; Southeast Rovers 1 Guilford Celtic 2

The Celts started the new season in Division 2 with a new name, some new players and three shiny new points! Southeast Rovers had finished 4th in Div 2 last season so this was always going to be a good test of how Guilford Celtic might fare in the coming season. And if this game is any indicator then it could be a great season. The first half was a mostly even battle between the teams with some great probing passes by the Celtic midfield and some smart runs by Rob and Micheal up front. Not many clear cut chances were coming to either team but when the Rovers did get a shot off Dustin was there to clear things up. The defense was largely untroubled but just as we moved in to injury time at the end of the half a slight miss kick allowed the ball to fall to a Rovers forward who slammed the ball in to the net. Not exactly against the run of play but certainly an unfair scoreline at the half.
The second half started with the Celts in commanding form. Strong runs by Johnny I and La Boca on the right probing the week Rovers defense and Dan on the left keeping everyone out.
A superb move by Johnny B unleashed an inch perfect pass to Michael on the edge of the box. With a lot still to do, Michael shimmied and shaped to fire an unstoppable shot past the stranded Rovers goalie. A really well deserved equalizer and there was a lot more to come from a fired up Celtic team. Rob had been elbowed in the mouth during the first half but battled on in the second and it was he who got the go ahead goal. Another great pass, this time from Michael, found Rob in space who had the simple task of slotting it in to the net. Two one up and cruising with  the Celtic team passing the ball around really well. The Southeast Rovers defense were struggling to deal with the probing runs of the Celtic attack as Tano, Marcos, Michael and Rob took it in turns to torture them.
As the half neared the end not surprisingly the team started to tire and the Rovers got back into the game with more chances coming their way. But each attack was repelled by the superb defense and Dustin in particular. Jim and Tim were rocks in the center of defense but to be honest this was a huge team effort. The whistle sounded to allow the new Guilford Celts to claim all 3 points on their return to the 2nd Division!

Man Of The Match; Hard to pick out from so many great players on the day. Johnny B and Alex in midfield were superb along with Nino and La Boca. The defense were solid especially Big Dan and Dustin. But because of his great  goal and assist, and overall attacking play the MOM goes to Michael for a superb performance!

Johnny I on the move!

Johnny H on the move too!

Friendly Match; Guilford Celtic 1 Guilford Black Eagles 0

Guilford Celtic tried out their new name against their old rivals the Black Eagles in a pre season friendly and ran out deserved one nil victors. Madison Celtic  have been playing out of Guilford for over a year and it was appropriate that they would change their name to represent their new home town. And the name change didn't seem to affect the way they played as they started off where they finished last year with a very polished performance. Nil nil at half time with some good play, turned into a narrow one nil win after a great goal from a trim looking Johnny B. He could have nabbed a couple more goals in the half as the Celts dominated the game.
Overall a nice run out before the tough stuff starts next week with the first game of the season away to Southeast Rovers in the Second Division!
