MATCH REPORT; Madison 3 Wallingford Morelia 1
What a great win by the Celts! Madison fully deserved their 3-1 victory over Wallingford Morelia, and if truth be told the score could have been 6 or 7 for the Celts. If they had taken all their chances the scoreline would have reflected their overall dominant play. The Celts started off in confident fashion with some superb midfield play, flowing football and great accurate passing. Johnny B, Tano and Rob Bz were buzzing in midfield and the back four were solid especially with Nino prowling the 18 yard line for any loose balls. The first goal was with the run of play and was taken superbly well by Tano as he picked up on a loose ball in the penalty box and slammed it past the opposition goalie.
It was great to take the lead in a game and it gave the Celts a lot of confidence everywhere on the field. The Celts should have score a second but Morelia held out to still be in touching distance by the end of the first half. At the start of the second half we knew that at least 4 players had to leave for other engagements so the team started off in a whirlwind of attacking football. Tano came close again at the start when his header hit off the bar. Shots by Leo and Mike and several of the midfielders should have resulted in another goal. Just as it looked like this might be a frustrating half Leo stole the ball of a a hesitant Morelia player and the ball was flicked onto the fast charging Johnny B who lobbed the ball superbly over the onrushing goalie. Any thoughts Morelia may have had of making a game of it were finally snuffed out after a huge kick out by Dustin was flicked on by Mike to a fast running Leo. The Celtic forward outstripped the final defender and slammed the ball behind the helpless goalkeeper to make it 3 0 to the Celts after only ten minutes of the second half. The rest of the game should have seen more goals for the Celts as Morelia became increasingly frustrated ( several yellows and a red card ). But near the end of the game the Celts allowed Morelia into the game more and more and after a defensive slip they were able to pull one back.
The final whistle meant the first points of the season for the Celts...hopefully the first of many!
Man of the Match; Many potential candidates from Dustin all the way through the team. Notably Nino and Rob Bz in the first half and Johnny B throughout. But I think the stand out performance at the back was Jim. Some solid defending and great passing out to midfield spread confidence throughout the team.
