MATCH REPORT; Madison1 North Branford 2

Madison Celtic were unlucky to not claim at least a point in a well balanced game last Sunday. The Celts started off a bit disjointedly against a smooth passing Branford team, finding themselves pinned into their own  half. When they did break out it was usually a quick boot up the field to no one in particular. After twenty minutes or so Celtic started to settle in and no damage had been done as Branford had not really had too many shots on goal. Then calamity struck as a simple cross come mishit shot caught the home goalie on the wrong foot and the ball was in the net.  It was hard to say that this was deserved but for all their possession in the first part of the game I guess it would have been no surprise to see the visitors one nil up. The goal sparked Celtic into life with some of their best spell of possession and attacking play leading up to the half. Some nice incisive passing from Johnaldo put Kevin through on goal with a shot that went past the post, then Jim with a great shot that nearly went in and finally Nino with a clear shot on goal saved after a huge clump of attempts on the opposition goal. The first half ended with the Celts feeling that they could win this one. That feeling was cemented early in the second half when a great move by the Celts was rewarded with a great goal by Kevin as he slammed an unstoppable shot past the opposition goalie. More chances came and went as both teams went for the winner. Unfortunately, it was the Branford team that got the break when a move down the Madison right saw a Branford winger cut into the box, and from the most acute of angles, fire a screamer past the helpless Madison goalie. The Celts pushed ever harder for the equalizer peppering the Branford goal with shots and headers and in the last minute even had a shot crashing off the bar. But it was not to be, another loss for the Celts against the background of an improving performance.

Man Of The Match; Some nice attacking play and good defensive break ups saw Nino as my MOM

MATCH REPORT; Madison 3 Wallingford Morelia 1

What a great win by the Celts! Madison fully deserved their 3-1 victory over Wallingford Morelia, and if truth be told the score could have been 6 or 7 for the Celts. If they had taken all their chances the scoreline would have reflected their overall dominant play. The Celts started off in confident fashion with some superb midfield play, flowing football and great accurate passing. Johnny B, Tano and Rob Bz were buzzing in midfield and the back four were solid especially with Nino prowling the 18 yard line for any loose balls. The first goal was with the run of play and was taken superbly well by Tano as he picked up on a loose ball in the penalty box and slammed it past the opposition goalie.
It was great to take the lead in a game and it gave the Celts a lot of confidence everywhere on the field. The Celts should have score a second but Morelia held out to still be in touching distance by the end of the first half.  At the start of the second half we knew that at least 4 players had to leave for other engagements so the team started off in a whirlwind of attacking football.  Tano came close again at the start when his header hit off the bar. Shots by Leo and Mike and several of the midfielders should have resulted in another goal. Just as it looked like this might be a frustrating half Leo stole the ball of a a hesitant Morelia player and the ball was flicked onto the fast charging Johnny B who lobbed the ball superbly over the onrushing goalie. Any thoughts Morelia may have had of making a game of it were  finally snuffed out after a huge kick out by Dustin was flicked on by Mike to a fast running Leo. The Celtic forward outstripped the final defender and slammed the ball behind the helpless goalkeeper to make it 3 0 to the Celts after only ten minutes of the second half. The rest of the game should have seen more goals for the Celts as Morelia became increasingly frustrated  ( several yellows and a red card ). But near the end of the game the Celts allowed Morelia into the game more and more and after a defensive slip they were able to pull one back.

The final whistle meant the first points of the season for the Celts...hopefully the first of many!

Man of the Match; Many potential candidates from Dustin all the way through the team. Notably Nino and Rob Bz in the first half and Johnny B throughout. But I think the stand out performance at the back was Jim. Some solid defending and great passing out to midfield spread confidence throughout the team.

NEXT GAME; Sunday 3rd May vs Morelia

Our next league game is this Sunday, at home versus Morelia with a 10am kick off. Let's get there early to put in some warm ups and practice. Morelia always gave us a good game in the past but we usually managed to edge them. Let's go for our first win guys!

Dustin is back from his various trips and will be between the sticks this weekend

MATCH REPORT; Madison 0 Albanian Eagles 3

Another game riddled with defensive errors leads to third loss in a row for the Celts.  I didn't see the whole game but what I saw was enough  Celtic continue to be a team that more often that not get beaten by their own mistakes and their inability to score. It's early in the season so I'm pretty hopeful this will turn around  but we have to start finding our own players on the field more consistently. It's clear the back four  ( or 3 ) need a protective midfielder in front of them. One that can take a pass from defense and pass it out to the midfielders. Without that the guys at the back hoof the ball up the field. Let's think about how we could fix that for the next games.
We should have won this game. We had more of the ball, we had chances to score but we know we will have errors in the game and unfortunately for us they always seem to get punished by a goal.

Let's win the next one!

Man of the Match.  I only saw the second half and again Tim was putting in a big shift so I'll give it to him
