MATCH REPORT; Guilford 3 Madison 0

Report by Jodingo!!

To Be Humped, or Not to be Humped?

Ay, there's the rub........it was a sunny, muggy morning in Guilford and a pitch infested with swarming mosquitoes helped the Madison Celts squad warm up, like a bikram yoga session, for their important match against rival Guilford Bell Curve. Madison had the numbers though to sub regularly throughout the game as 17 or 18 players were ready and eager to play. With Johnaldo absent, an injured Rugginho attempted to fill his shoes as coach, complete with clipboard and field tactics. The match got off to a fast pace, with both teams looking dangerous and fighting hard for the ball. It was evident that ball control was key and both teams were passing well and concisely. El Flaco and DS subbed in after arriving late to the match, and Flaco buzzed about the midfield taking and stealing the ball at will, and then making deep runs into the Bell Curve's end. It seemed that the Bell Curve strategy was to boot the ball long and have their forwards run after it. It was exactly that tactic that caught the Celtic back line on their heels. With Celtic seemingly in control in the midfield and making a number of dangerous runs at the Bell Curve goalie ( who in his own right, is one of the primary reasons why the Curve has the lowest goal-against tally in the league) it was then that the first big mistake by the Celtic defense was made. A long ball up the center, from their left middie, over the head of Goggs, sent it into a footrace to the top of the Celts' 18 yard line. The Hulk lurched a few steps forward off his line to run to clear the ball, but doubted he could make it out in time, so he stood fast. The Bell Curve forward (a Glaswegian wearing Glasgow Celtic socks even!!), won the race and easily finished off his run with an easy kick into the inside corner. Demoralizing a bit, but the Celts pressed on and after a hard tackle by one of the Bell Curve midfielders, El Flaco lined up for a 40 yard free kick from the left side. He rocketed a shot to the far upper right corner of the goal where the impressive opposition keeper just barely pushed the ball over the cross bar! The first half wound down with hard-fought contests in the middle, especially by Halil and Roniildo, and a number of near-misses by the Celts. The half time whistle blew with the Bell Curve up 1-0, but with Madison feeling they were the dominant team. The start of the second half saw Safet back in the stopper position, and he made the most of it, making a number of sweet defensive stops followed by raging runs into the opposition box, which unfortunately ended in misfired shots. With the teams seemingly evenly matched in the middle, it was again a lone surge by the Bell Curve that would prove the dagger that deflated the Madison hopes to conquer their rival. A run up the Madison right side by a Bell Curve lonesome winger, and then the ball bouncing around the Madison box, and then finding a sprinting forward run right up the gut of the Madison defense, with several defenders either following the Bell Curve player in or simply watching the flow of play as if watching a movie take place before their eyes, left the Hulk no chance and the second goal was scored. Madison Celtic still had some energy left and were pushing hard to get a glimmer of respect back by scoring at least one goal, when a nice short cross from Tano on the right wing found the head of Jorge a foot or two in front of an open net. What appeared to be a sure goal defied the laws of physics as the ball shot straight up and well over the cross bar. It was clear at that point, if not already, that it wasn't to be Madison's day. To cap off the Celts misery, with only a minute or less to play, the Hulk, who played a tough match, picked up a ball in the box and tossed it out directly to the foot of a Bell Curve forward, who simply flicked the ball back into the empty net. So what was an even match, with good ball possession by both sides, and some players thinking Celtic to be the dominant squad, appears by the end result to be a thrashing.

As a famous guy once said;

Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, or to take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them?

In other words the league is not over yet, we have nine games left to get into that promo spot but we have to fight for it! But we sure are making it tough for ourselves!

Man of the Match; A tough spotted dick award this time. Both Roniildo and Halil played well in midfield and my vote just goes to Halil. A tough first game for Ruggerho as coach but he did well...watch out Johnaldo!

  4. Jodingo!! this was the view of the game from TANO on the previous post;

we play very well with unlucky result.
The Final score 0-3 didn't reflect at all what we did in the field. Ball possession was 70% for us.
Chances to score a goal that mostly we do? 6
    From many players including me.
They rich our area like 4 or 5 times in the whole game. And everybody play well.
    That is the frustrated part.
I believe Sunday we lose our chance to be Champs this Year and probably to get to 2nd. div too.
After drink was talking about getting together once time a week and practice (I hope they do).
Roniildo and Ruggero did it great in organize the subing and the make good when they put Safet in the center mid.
Mosquitoes was an issue I was the first to arrive at the field but I have to run from there to get some repellent.
I ask Ruggero if he get some pics but he said game was so intense that he can't have a chance to take it.
Carlitos was out by 15 min of the 2nd. half with an injury.
And for the men of the match I like to mention Safet and Jack both did good but I wait for a second opinion fro the guys who watch the game from the side line.

  9. I read The email of take a couple of week of?
That is like a price for doing something bad.
I like to have two day weeks practice with Bruce including for Shooting long passes etc.etc,
But like all ways happen I waste my time to recall for practice so I do thing to get better myself then. ANd I Agree with Jody MoM (Halil). It is hard to call the best MoM when everybody do mostly well.

  14. ........El gato, thanks for the vote of confidence "Definitely Halil MOM"...;-) I happen to agree with stellar performances from Fribeka and Safet in his new role...he looked natural, and was not offside once..LOL

Graet report Jodingo!! Who would have thunk it? All that real time game evauation, might have dampened ur performance...on joking :-)

  15. Thanks everyone for behaving well in and out of the field. It was a taught game but we had our chances.

Jodingo!! That is a pic of me taken few years back when I was still young.

  16. Tano i totally agree with you. Practicing against my own team would have me better prepared for the good teams

  17. Good reporting by Jodingo, just to reiterate and summarize the game, we played better than Guilford, we mostly had the possesion of the ball like Tano said but the difference was:

Guilford had 3 opportunities and scored 3 goals and we didn't bank on any of our opportunities and couldn't put the ball in the net....the other big factor was Guilford defense played very well (that's why they have the best defensive line in our division)and didn't make any mistakes

  18. Guys we can organize some firendly games against other teams but we also have enough of a squad to play against each other.... this may also be informative....For example, i would love to defend against the Tano/Jorge attack force to see how i would do!

What do you think? We can use the same time slots of 10 am but we have to take it seriously as a scheduled game... no point in having 7 of us turn up we would need as a full a squad as possible and any trialists that people may have.

    tell me what you think

  19. Johnaldo, In terms of player counting for practices, I'm actually out all Sundays in July.... in NC for the first 2, in Paris for the next 2, and in VT for the last one. I'll happily attend practices once I'm back in town.

  22. Let me see how many can show up today,
6 pm at Morgan HS. those guys play better that many of Guilford Bell Curve, or Orange.
Ask Ruggero. But if we are more than 6 of our team who shows up, we can play against them as a team.
And is good idea to have many friendlies and try different strategies, and play the stronger def in one side vs the best fwd. as Johnaldo said.
If you ask me why if we play well we didn't have positive results?
First we are the 3rd. best def. and the 3rd best fwds. based on goals results.
The way we play are not bad at all, remember in all type of games is an aleatory rule that is involved and make difference in some degrees, called lucky.
We make so much better with the ball on the ground and the air balls that we are putting in is when they came from the corner line to the box. So we need practice two things:
Create a solid strait line that play well with offside rule.
Make Midfielders self confidence to move the ball side to side and be the director of the game orchestra.
And fwds. need to be self confidence on dribbling between def until you have just open goal to do it if you don't turn and look for mid support and move on for open space. All game move on move on, until the def runs crazy

  23. update on future friendly games:

Talked to Cheshire Inter to have a friendly for 7/10 but they have a make up game for that day but can possibly play on 7/17..they will let me know. I also know a bunch of younger players that I have played with in the past and they might be interested to play with us...they can bring a whole team. My question for El Gato is...can we use the Exchange field on Sunday? It would be nice if we can and we can go to beach after the game.

    ReplyDelete
  24. We can also possibly have a friendly games against East Haven, North Branford and Guilford from our division.....CARSL games is still ongoing till end of July and we can't play against them..at least not in July

    ReplyDelete
  25. .......Johnaldo, I like the ideas of the whole squad getting together for matches. If we all show it is 11 aside.....I think we also lean a lot more about each others playing style, strengths and weaknesses this way, which all bodes well for the future league games....great idea, should have done this a long time ago

  26. I am happy because you are not desillusioned by the last loss. remember the soccer gives revenge and if there is guilty, I am. I take the responsability, as the oldest man and a clear "gol" failed. I dont care much if I win, lose o draw or score goals. The most important is to have you as friends. I love the idea playing with us and having Jody and John opponents breathing dawn my neck to mark me and feel like they play.

  27. Awesome Jorge......the most important thing we are doing here is forming the friendships. And relationships thatt can last a lifetime. The last year or so has seenus begin to mature as a cohesive team who likes to hang out after the games. We r doing great boys, and I look forward to our next match........

  28. I cannot practice tonight (Wed). I might be able to practice tomorrow night (Thurs) if there are people playing.

I am out of state July 10 and most likely will be very hung over July 17.

  29. Regarding the match against Guiford...

Overall we played ok and had long spells were we were the stronger team. We lacked some spark and urgency to fight back when we went down 2-0, which was disappointing. I know it was hot.
But from the sideline it was surprising how little movement occurred for alot of the game.

We all talked about keeping our shape and not having big gaps btwn MF and offense or MF and defense. I'm not blaming MF as we all have to move together to play well.

Guilford has a good defense as Tom noted, but we did well to unlock them and create some great looks at goal. We also shut down some good attackers. We just had mental lapses in front of both goals that hurt us overall and they did not.

  30. Jorge: I admire you how you always be at the goal and run the whole time more than some younger fellas, so missing a goal is cruel but as a fwd. we have to deal with it because we now revenge is always around the corner, and don't forget how many games we win because you score.See you Amigo Boludo jaja.
