Vote for Forward of the Year!

THE PLAYER OF THE YEAR POLLS CONTINUE!

And we are going to continue to vote for our players of the year after the great win by Tim as defender of the year!  Now it's with with our 3 mains strikers Tano, Leo and Kevin! Plus, I threw in Carlos again and Johnaldo!

Leo and Kevin joined the team in the second half of the season and have made  a great impact up front. Tano scored 5 goals during 2013, Kevin 4 and both Johnaldo and Leo scored 2. Carlos plays anywhere he wants but scores for fun ( 4 goals )

The poll machine is at the top right of the blog, so go ahead and vote!

Vote For The Defender of the Year

Hi Guys, it's that time of the year where we get a chance to vote for our players of the year! We have some great players and some superb performances to choose from in 2013! Of course, this is more of a popularity vote at times as some people get hold of slave computers around the World to bump up their voting capabilities. But it's just a bit of fun. We are going to start with the defenders this time and what a great group to choose from!  I  have had to make choices around those players that have switched between defence and midfield but hopefully it still allows you to vote for the best player. The voting machine is at the top right of the blog! Go ahead and vote! Midfield and strikers up next!

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING!

2013 Season Summary

Hi Guys

Thought I would round off the season by providing a summary of the year.

It was definitely a tale of two halves during the  year with the first 9 games resulting in 7 losses, 1 draw and only 1 win. A total of only 4 points out of  the potential 27 that were available. We scored 7 goals and let in 24 with some very disappointing results  ( anyone remember the Eagles game? ). However, during the summer break the Celts recruited some great players from the disbanded Guilford team and the second half of the season was a noticeably different experience with 5 losses and 4 wins for a total of 12 points. During that last half of the season 14 goals were scored and 17 lost. From being sure fire relegation fodder the Celts fought back to the point were the last game of the season would make all the difference. The least said about that one the better though!  There is no doubt in my mind that if we had the same team at the beginning of the season as we had at the end we would have finished comfortably at the top of the table.

As for the player stats?

Tano finished top league scorer with 5 goals, followed by Alex with 4 and then Johnny B and Kevin with 3 a piece.

As for Man of the Match awards Alex topped the list with 4 followed by Hulk with 3 and then Johnny B, Roniildo and Tim with 2 each.

If we add in our last 3 cup games into the mix, the final 2013 picture looks like this;

We played 21 games winning 8, losing12, drawing 1.

Our overall Cup and League top scorers were;

 Johnny B with 7, followed by Tano with 5 and then Alex, Carlos and Kevin with 4 each.

I thought it was a great fun season and the most important part of the whole year was having fun every weekend with a great bunch of guys!

Roll on next year!

CUP RESULT; Madison 5 Falcons 2

The 2013 season came to a sparkling end  for the Madison Celts with an epic cup win against the New Britain Falcons. The comprehensive 5-2 victory ensured the Celts finished top of their cup section,  with nine points out of nine, and a semi final spot awaiting them in the Spring!
However, after 45 minutes of this game no one could have predicted the final score. A goalless first half was testament to a very tough, hard fought game with chances few and far between. The half was peppered with some tough tackles, great runs and a bit of hammy play acting by the visitors. The best chances came to the Celts during the half but not before an opening onslaught by the Falcons that had the experienced Madison defence gasping for air. Some last minute saves by the Hulk and well timed tackles by the back four kept them out. As the half wore on the center midfield of Johnny B and Roniildo started to get a strangle hold of the game and the fantastic lung bursting runs by Carlos on the left wing had the Falcon's team chasing shadows. But the second half restarted with the game still in the balance at 0-0.
If the first half was tough for both teams the second was mainly a long painful experience for the Falcons as the Celts stepped it up and ripped them apart. The running and passing of the midfield quartet was proving too much for the Falcons and when the attack line kept pressing you knew something was going to give. The dam burst when Roniildo crossed a great ball to Kevin who managed to powerfully head the ball into the net even as he was falling backwards. A second goal came quickly for the Celts when the superb Johnny B slammed the ball in from a distance. At this point in the game Carlos and Johnny B were unplayable so it was no surprise when the evergreen Flaco scorched in the 3rd from a good thirty yards out. Another great set of moves involving, Johnaldo, Johnny B  and Kevin ended with a sweet lay off ball to JohnnyB who thumped the ball into the net for his second and the Celts 4th. With only 15 minutes left on the clock the only question left seemed to be how many would the Celts score? The ref had other ideas by presenting the Falcons with a lifeline by gifting them a penalty for the most innocuous shoulder to shoulder incident. The demoralized Falcons scored and gave themselves even more of a boost when they scored a second as the Madison defence went to sleep. But this was not going to be one of those back from the brink stories for the Falcons as Flaco beat the tired offside trap and went on a mazy run into the box and slammed the ball into the net for the Celts 5th of the game.
The whistle went and the Celts were done for the year with a great close out victory!

MAN OF THE MATCH; Some great performances by the back line and the Hulk when needed. Ruggero and  Roniildo were immense in the middle and the forwards were also great throughout the game. But the stand out performances were from the dynamic duo of Johnny B and Carlos!

Many thanks to LOTB for the great photos and the after match beer!

CUP GAME, Sunday 17th Nov Vs New Britain Falcons

OK Guys, the last game of the year is upon us!  We have our final cup game against New Britain Falcons. After all the confusion about which field, and which time, the State Cup committee moved the game to our home field!

So, it is now a home game at Town Campus field with a 10am kick off!

The Falcons are a very good team that hammered both our previous opponents and will be a tough test. Although we are already through to the semi finals it would be good to put in a good showing in our final 2013 game!

See you Sunday!   Anyone not had a chance to bring beer yet?

CUP RESULT; Naugatuck River Rats 1 Madison 2

MADISON CELTIC FACEBOOK PAGE!

The Celts made sure of a slot in the cup semi finals with a dominant performance against the Naugatuck River Rats. Although at times, mainly the first half, they made it more difficult than it should have been. The Celts certainly dominated  possession over the first twenty minutes of the game with the defence and midfield holding the ball and passing well. Up front Leo, Kevin and Tano were running hard at the opposition defence and the out ball to Carlos on the left wing was working superbly well. Carlos went on several great runs blowing past player after player but the end ball didn't quite connect with the strike force. Lots of chances were coming and going and it took the new shooting boots of Leo to get the Celts into the lead. Gathering the ball on the Madison left wing Leo cut down to the edge of the bye line and as he shaped to cross the ball he decided to take an audacious shot instead, slamming the ball into the net from an acute angle. A deserved lead for the Celts, but just when it looked like the visitors would start to overrun the opposition they actually lost shape and dropped out of the game. The River Rats started to get much more of the ball and caught the Celts in possession time after time. The Hulk was called into action a number of times and the attacking formation the Celts had taken at the beginning of the game just seemed to dissipate. Carlos and Ruggero on the wings were getting starved of the ball and the strikers were running into space with no likelihood the ball would be there when they arrived. Maybe not surprisingly the Naugatack team managed to squeeze out a deserved equalizer before the end of the first half when they marched though the middle of the defence and dinked the ball over the onrushing Hulk. The half ended with the teams tied but Madison clearly knew what was ailing them. Passing or booting the ball straight down the middle of the park was not working out and a much needed return to using the wings had to be the answer. The second half started with Madison more or less forgetting the half time talk but gradually they turned the screw and brought Carlos and Ruggero, as well as the rest of the front line back into the game. At times the possession must have been nearly 100% as the Celts kept the Rats penned in their half for huge amounts of time. Lots of great chances appeared but were passed up but then another great move by Tano down the left finished with a simple pass to Leo who slammed in his second of the match. Roniildo was the main driving force in the midfield tackling and breaking up any possession that Naugatuck team tried to build. Although another goal did not come their way the Celts played out the rest of the game fairly comfortably and when the whistle went they had another three points in the bag and had qualified for the semi finals of the cup with a game to spare.

MAN OF THE MATCH; Some solid performances throughout the game from a number of players. Leo's first two goals for the team were notable but the the great attacking play by Carlos and the strong midfield performance by Roniildo makes them the MOMs of the match!

Note: Except where noted (league name in parentheses), all teams are from the Shoreline Adult Soccer League. See SASL for their League Website.
