The Celts rounded off the last game of the Spring/Summer section of the season with a great away win against Wilton Wolves. A small squad was available for the game but greatly bolstered by the return of the the outstanding right back Johnaldo making his season debut ( finally... ).
The Celts started the game with great possession play and a real threat upfront with Dom and Ravi linking up effectively. The midfield was wining back possession and picking up any loose balls with ease causing the Wilton defense to retreat to their 16 yard box.
The intense pressure got its reward early in the first half when Ravi persisted in getting a shot off in the box and squeezed the ball past the goalie for the opening goal. Multiple chances came after this opener with Ravi, Dom and Todd creating havoc within the Wilton defense. The Celtic midfield were dominating possession and in the rare moments when the Wilton attack broke though the Guilford mid line the defense was resolute. Johnny I in his makeshift role as goalie was handling the ball well and controlling the pace of the game from the back. halfway through the half the Celts were awarded a free kick just outside the opposition box. David and Rob attempted a quick free kick but the ball bounced around a number of players before it arrived at the feet of Todd who blasted it into the net. Two nil up and cruising the Celts had another great move down the right with the ball crossed in to Dom who managed to get a fairly weak shot fired off at the goalie who then made a monumental hash of it letting the ball trickle in for the Celts third of the game. With the half nearing its end the only blot over the 45 minutes was an avoidable goal for Wilton that gave them some encouragement going in at 3 1. The second half was a lot like the first but as the half wore on the Celtic 11 man squad was starting to tire and defend a little but further back. Wilton started to get more and more of the ball and their no 14 in particular was starting to get a lot of space to run in to. With about 15 minutes left i the game Wilton pushed in to the Celtic half and played a one two on the outside of the box releasing a player with the ball and giving Johnny I no chance as they slotted in the second of the game. It was all Wilton now as the Celtic team tired badly and they smelled the opportunity to grab an unlikely point. But the Celtic defense marshaled by Big Jim held strong and the game was finally put to bed when Leo moved up from his defensive duties to slam in a fourth for the Celts. A well deserved win and moved the Celts up to 5th in the league. After the break their next game will be on August 19th with a home game against league leaders Panzones!
